In the heart of Umbria, near the ancient city of Perugia, Villa Aureli stands like a jewel in a hilly countryside, where lines of pine trees mark the horizon. The villa dates back to the 18th century when Count Sperello Aureli restored a 16th century tower adorning it with frescoes, prints, and painted furniture. Among the wonders of the house, the colourful Vietri ceramic floors, different in each room, the bright fist floor gallery, the garden ornamental walls and the orangerie. The present owner, Sperello di Serego Alighieri, works on astrophysics at the Firenze Observatory. He offers two apartments where the guests enjoy the rare beauty of the villa and two apartments in the house of the former gardener Adolfo. All the guests have private spaces in the park, with wonderful views on the hilly Umbrian countryside. The pool (12x4), made out the ancient water cistern, is set in a sheltered area of the park, with southern exposure. On demand, dinners and wines of the house are served.

Special interest holidays
At Villa Aureli we try to preserve the environment and to offer our guests a stay consistent with the ecosystem. When the villa and the garden were made some centuries ago, there where no electricity nor gas, and chemical fertilizers did not exist. Both were therefore built in order to minimize
energy needs. The thick walls isolate the rooms from cold in winter and from heat in summer. The water pipes collecting rain from the roofs and leading it to the orangerie, to the fountain and to the water tank of the vegetable garden used to collect water for the garden without energy consumption. Modern life needs extra energy, so we provided to install a system of photovoltaic solar panels that covers the needs of all the apartments, including air-conditioning in Adolfo’s House, where the walls are not as thick as in the Villa. We offer our guests meals prepared using the natural products of our farm, following the traditions of Umbrian cookery.

The distances to airports are approximately: Perugia 20 mins. Florence 120 mins. Bologna Forli 120 mins. Bologna International 150 mins. Ancona 90 mins. Pisa 140 mins. Rome Ciampino 150 mins. Car hire is essential.
Distances
Villa Aureli is situated next to the village of Castel del Piano. The ancient Etruscan city of Perugia with its monuments, museums and theatres is only 10 km away. The Lago Trasimeno with its islands is very close. Many other charming old cities of Umbria (Assisi, Todi, Città della Pieve, Gubbio, Spoleto, Orvieto), Tuscany (Siena, Cortona, Arezzo) and Marche (Urbino, Iesi) are within easy reach, i.e. less than about one hour by car. Firenze and Roma are at about two hours drive.

Owner profile
Sperello di Serego Alighieri owner of Villa Aureli
About the owner
My main profession is astrophysical research and I work at the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory in Florence. However I was born at Villa Aureli and lived there until I left for University when I was 18 years old. Therefore, while leaving in Florence, I have a special link with Villa Aureli and spend most of the weekends there. I am married with Carla Passi and we have two sons: Pietro, who is 31 and is himself father of Leonardo, and Laura, who is 28. On occasions they all help me with Villa Aureli, so that our guests will always meet at least one member of the family during their stay. You can learn more about me visiting my personal web site.
Year purchased: before 1950
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
I have inherited Villa Aureli from my father Leonardo, who actually started renting apartments more than 25 years ago, when my sisters and me left the house for University and work. The villa is with our family since around 1850, when it was bought by my great-grandfather. The family took great care in preserving the villa and its nice surroundings: the villa, its annexes and the Italian-style garden are a national monument, and as such are protected by the Italian Ministry of Culture. In fact the countryside to the South of the villa is well preserved and free from new buildings. Nevertheless the villa is at about 10 km from Perugia, a large town of etruscan origin, which can be reached by bus, car or with the modern Minimetro.
Unique benefits of the property
As a result of the love and care of my family for the villa, and of the protection by the cultural authorities, you can still enjoy much of the decorations, the furniture and the unique atmosphere left by Sperello Aureli, the nobleman who refurbished the villa around 1750. The fact that my family has continuously lived in the villa resulted in a slow and quiet adjustment to the modern needs and comforts, avoiding the distortions often present in the old buildings that are suddenly refurbished after long periods of disuse. A prime example are the 70 large pots with lemon trees, which for more than 3 centuries have been watered at least twice per week, have been sheltered in the orangerie for every winter, have been protected against insects and diseases and regularly renewed by layering.
