Gigliola is pronounced “jeel-YOH-lah”. What we like about Gigliola, above all else, is its location, just 3 kilometers outside the lovely hill town of Montespertoli, about 30 minutes southwest of Florence.

Gigliola is a true villa dating from the 17th century.
Rooms are to grand scale and furnishings tasteful if faded. On the ground floor, you will find three living rooms, a big quite rustic dining room, old-fashioned kitchen, plus a twin bedroom with en-suite bath (shower over tub). We ourselves have slept in this room and know it to be particularly spacious and comfortable (and, in low season, well-heated). Two of the living rooms give out onto a lovely terrace for outdoor dining and lounging in fine weather. Upstairs is another sitting room with billiard table plus 6 additional bedrooms, each with its own bath. Four bedrooms are matrimonial; two are twins. The quality of the mattresses varies; most are good, and the owner is gradually bringing everything up to standard. Down the way and enjoying beautiful views over the surrounding countryside is a lovely swimming pool for the exclusive use of the villa. This pool overlooks a second pool used by guests of the farmhouse apartments.

Developing over two floors, Casa Gialla is composed of a glass-enclosed L-shaped living/dining room, separate kitchen, two matrimonial bedrooms and one twin, plus three baths, two with shower only and one with shower over tub. No phone (yet, but inquire);independent heating and laundry; use of farmhouse swimming pool. We don’t know of a more pleasant, more reasonably priced accommodation for three couples or two small families in all of Tuscany.

 

Check availability Il Fienile - Gigliola
Il Fienile means “hayloft” and this is what it one was. The owner of Gigliola has recently transformed Il Fienile into a particularly attractive holiday home ideal for a small family or for two couples. The biggest plus of Il Fienile is its completely private swimming pool overlooking charming countryside. The cottage contains a nice living/dining room with fireplace and good seating; a small kitchen; and on the ground floor a bedroom with indivisible matrimonial bed and bath with tub and shower. Upstairs, in what was the true hayloft, is a second bedroom with joinable twins and a bathroom identical to the one below.

 

Check availability La Terrazza - Gigliola
Terrazza is namely, the American second floor, accessed completely independently from an outside staircase. By simply opening a door, by the way, an additional apartment and Terrazza can become one large place for 12. You enter into a capacious living room with fireplace, and then into the dining room and separate kitchen, which gives out onto a charming terrace ideal for dining and lounging outdoors. One bedroom with indivisible matrimonial bed has a bath with both a tub and separate shower stall. The second bedroom has joinable twins and a bath with shower over the tub. The third bedroom has an indivisible matrimonial bed with shower only.

Through the combination of history, tradition and progress, the present owners of the estate, the Piazzini family produces first-class wines that appear in the acclaimed wine guide Gambero Rosso. The ancient wine–growing tradition and the special qualities of the vineyards belonging to the 'Fattoria La Gigliola' guarantee the production of top-class wine. The most popular and widely grown grape of the region and dominant character of Chianti is the Sangiovese grape.

Further details
Many years ago there was a country estate in Tuscany. Its stately home and church of San Piero in Mercato belonged at one time to a small village with many watch towers. This picturesque idyll was destroyed by the wars in the year 1300. Only the Campanile and the tower of 'Fattoria Gigliola' can be seen today. As of the 2000 season, the owner of Gigliola had restored a series of lovely farmhouse accommodations lodged in a comletely independent structure on the property.
