Poggio Le Stalle is set in 28 acres of land with our own olive, fruit, nut and oak trees. Bought by us in 1989 we have lovingly restored the villa/farmhouse and the charming cottages nearby. We lived as a family in the farmhouse which given the villa a sense of lived-in comfort which guests say sets it apart from many rental places. The indoor and outdoor sitting and eating areas are spacious with other seating arrangements dotted through the surrounding garden and fields giving guests the opportunity to appreciate the views and the beauty of the secluded and unspoilt Umbrian countryside. The tranquil location makes for deep, restful nights of sleep and afternoon siestas. Though off the beaten track it is close to the medieval town of Amelia and many other famous hillside towns with the unique artistic features and culinary specialties they offer. The surrounding natural countryside makes for great walking and touring.

Notes on accommodation
The property and the self catering accomodation villa offers the perfect setting from which to explore the delights of Italian rural and medieval culture. Set off the beaten track in a mixture of farmland, orchards and oak trees it is accessed from the main village road along a Strada Bianca. As this gravel road is used by tractors it can be uneven and rutted in parts. The pool is not yet fenced in so young children need to be supervised. There is heating for winter months and fans for hot weather. Lots of books are provided and there are two open fireplaces as well as a wood burning stove in the library/den of the villa/farmhouse. The houses are full of original paintings, art work and furnishings. There is a washing machine available and iron and ironing board. There is also lots of literature on the locality and surrounds available for guests. There are fans for summer and central heating and open fireplaces for winter months also a log burning stove.
Accessibility
Le Stalle, the large villa, has internal stairs to the bedrooms with no lift. The houses and pool are connected by gravel paths and small, low steps.

The house has its own terrace with comfortable seating arrangements plus tables and chairs for dining. There's a delightful terraced garden and vegetable patch with shaded seating areas. The pool has ample natural shade, sunbeds, tables and chairs, with other seating and playing areas around the property and inside the olive grove and a picnic area in the fields shaded by a listed oak tree. The large pool -measuring 14m by 7m and 1.40 metres deep- is shared by the owners who use it sporadically. There's a courtyard around a traditional wood burning pizza oven with a large BBQ next to this as well as a smaller BBQ near each house. There is a pleasant walk within the grounds and many short or long walks close by. Le Stalle and it's location has been used to host art groups, retreats and workshops and is repeatedly praised for the relaxed and energising feel it offers the guests.

Travel
Poggio le stalle is reachable from several airports -all driving distance. The closest are Ciampino and fiumicino (rome airports) a 90 mins drive. Perugia airport 60 mins, Ancona 140, Pisa 170 mins. Generally speaking the budget airlines don't fly into fiumicino though major airlines now offer cheaper flights there. Car hire is essential and good deals are offered by your airline. Check the companies' cars are based in the airport not in the local town which adds more time to your journey.
Distances
Macchie is 4 mins away by car or 10 mins on foot and the residents are very friendly. Our closest town, Amelia, whose walls are reputedly older than the walls of Rome, is 10 minute drive away. Between a 30-60 min drive away can be found other famous medieval towns such as Todi, Perugia, Narni, Orvieto and Spoleto. The centre of Rome can be reached by car. Via Veneto of 'la dolce vita' is just a 90 min drive away. Or you can drive over the hills and take a 45 min train ride from Orte at 4.50 euro
Further details
Our friendly village shop is well stocked. They also have their own fresh and cured meats and fantastic sausage. Amelia has several supermarkets, food shops, banks and cash machines. The staple foodstuffs are reminiscent of those stocked by expensive delicatessens outside of Italy. In Amelia and nearby there are several restaurants offering typical Umbrian cuisine at reasonable prices, a destination restaurant and one offering a coeliac menu. Food is very important here. Italian life is centered around the piazza, or square, and table. The long spate of festas, sacra's and festivals in this area, which run from late spring through to early autumn, are testimony to this. In an atmosphere of excitement, bursting with local pride, the residents of each town or village cook and serve al fresco their own specialties. These range from frog legs and snails to hare and wild boar and the meals including wine are given at very low cost. There is music and dancing too and in a relaxed fun atmosphere visitors can polka, foxtrot and tango the night away. Not to be missed are the historical re enactments and pageants or 'corteo storico' run by the towns of Umbria at different times in summer. Here townspeople dress up in handmade medieval costumes and among other things parade through the town to the accompaniment of trumpets and drums. The thermal spas of Viterbo are within easy reach- just a 40min drive away. The Terni waterfalls and white water rafting are 35 mins drive away. Horse riding and trekking are offered by a local riding school at very reasonable prices which include insurance and gear.
For wine lovers you can buy table wine directly from the vineyards of Amelia at less than two euro a litre as well as a wide selection of bottled wines. If this all sounds too exhausting then what better than a prosecco in the square of Amelia engaging in the age -old ritual of people watching. For art lovers and choc-aholics Perugia is not to be missed.

Guest comments
Le Stalle was perfect. Meals on the patio (cooked in the large, well-equipped kitchen) great views, friendly villagers, fine dining and sipping beers in Amelia, leisurely drives on convenient and good highways to towns like Orvieto and Deruta & more. Helen & Panaghis were gracious hosts taking us on walks, to local wineries, pointing us to interesting sites. We'll definitely return to Le Stalle - Diane
We have holidayed at the Poggio every year since 1999. The accommodation is of an excellent standard with warm, helpful back up from the owners at all times. Peaceful and tranquil, it's the ultimate escape from busy lives. There's lots to do and see in the vicinity - C.O'Brian
We think it's our own special secret we've enjoyed our 3 generational family holiday there for years. All the houses are very comfortable and well equipped for your needs but the most important aspect of Le Stalle is the welcome you receive from the Hannicks and the people of Macchie - The Murphys.

About the owner
In 1989 we bought the property. Since then we've restructured 4 buildings, licked the olive groves into shape, planted trees, made a terraced garden, made friends, attended baptisms, weddings & we've also buried friends. We've had hospital stays and emergency visits and two of our grandchildren were born here. The tough parts remain tough: Goliathan bureaucracy and no pg tips. But the climate, the tranquility & beauty of our surrounds, the people, language, food & wine are hard to beat. I'm Yorkshire and my husband is Greek. Both cultures are known for their warmth and hospitality. Our guests always comment on the warm welcome we offer, our discreet presence and willingness to offer any kind of help, touring tips and general information they ask for.
Year purchased: 1980's
Why the owner chose a home in this location
Our views are spectacular and what we and our guests, love about our property and surrounding area is the proximity to nature, the views and tranquility. Close enough to a village to not feel completely isolated yet separate enough to enjoy the sense of freedom gained from being far from the crowds. The people of the village and area are warm, friendly and welcoming but not intrusive. I fractured my leg recently and, immobile, I ordered my Christmas joint from the local butcher by phone. A short while later he arrived in his van, apron and all, bringing two cuts of meat. "I just wanted to make sure that I understood what you want" he said as he showed me what he thought I wanted. He was right too.
Unique benefits of the property
We lived for several years in the farmhouse that our guests now rent. It's living and outdoor areas are spacious and very comfortable. The kitchen area is spacious enough to allow three or more people to be involved in the cooking. Four years ago I began a terraced garden project which is a wonderful addition to the Stalle which overlooks it. The seasons are each unique in what they offer. The sunrises in autumn and wintertime can often be stunning, and it's fun to forage for mushrooms, chicory and wild asparagus in their season. My favourite months are May and early June....the long warm days with an abundance of birds and spring flowers and the promise of summer. There is something about the air and location which makes it the best place there is to rest, chill out and sleep.
