A few minutes walk to the harbour and the Piazza Duomo, said to be one of the most beautiful squares in Italy.

Coast/Beach
There is a lido and small beach, open in the summer months, on Ortigia. A five minute walk to a water taxi (fare 1 €) takes you across to a beautiful beach during the months of June to Sept. Other beaches are 15/20 minutes away by car, bus or train.
Travel
Catania airport is approx. 45 minutes away by car or taxi. There is a bus service directly to Ortigia from the airport. Palermo is about three hours away by car. One of the delights of staying in Ortigia is exploring on foot. Sicily has a good public transport system to see the rest of the Island. Buses and trains are cheap and reliable or cars can be rented by the day.
Distances
Ortigia itself has many fascinating locations, all within easy walking distance. The Temple of Apollo, The Duomo, Castle Maniace, Traditional puppet theatre and the Bellomo Museum with its rare Caravaggio. Greek and Roman theatres in the main town are 30 minutes walk or 10 minutes by bus. Mount Etna is about an hour's drive. The Baroque city of Noto 30 minutes. Agrigento, the valley of the temples and Villa Casale with the finest collection of Roman mosaics are both about two hours drive.
Further details
The local fish and fruit market is worth a visit and there are plenty of food shops and over two hundred restaurants. Because Siracuse is a port and agricultural centre it is a lively city and a 12 month destination with shops, banks and restaurants open all year round.
