Villa Santa Margherita is sited on an ancient pilgrim path and its history dates back to Roman times. These days it is the perfect setting for a group of up to 12 people to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the famous Chianti wine-growing area, with every modern comfort. Memorable meals take place in the large formal dining room, on the shaded terrace overlooking the pool and the valley, or around the wood-burning pizza and bread oven with barbecue grill. The bedrooms provide a spacious retreat and all enjoy lovely views of the valley or garden. The grounds are fenced and gated for security with ample parking, and the road access is excellent. A local chef will cater for guests on request, there is a restaurant within walking distance, and a wide selection of cafes, restaurants and shops in the delightful town of Greve in Chianti. The location is an ideal base for touring Tuscany and its vineyards. Only an hour from Florence or Siena for shopping and culture expeditions.

Changeover day
In high and mid seasons, preference is given to Saturday changeovers, with arrival after 4pm and departure by 10am. In low season, arrival day is flexible.

Notes on accommodation
The villa is suitable for family groups with children because the large fenced grounds provide space to roam safely, and the ground floor rooms have good indoor/outdoor flow. The downstairs bedrooms can serve as self-contained accommodation for a nanny, or a peaceful retreat for grandparents. The terracotta floors downstairs, the parquet floors upstairs, the antique furniture, the window shutters and the ceiling beams all have the mellow patina of age. The home entertainment system includes a large flat-screen TV, DVD player and stereo with CD player. A docking station for iPod and iPhone is provided. Wireless internet access for use with guest's laptop is included.
Accessibility
While not specially constructed for wheelchair access, the ground floor is well suited to guests with limited mobility because there is level access to the house from the parking area and the ground floor bedrooms and living areas have no steps.
Outside
The swimming pool (for exclusive use of guests) has a large surrounding decked area with a generous supply of sun loungers and an outdoor shower. The pool measures 10.5m x 4.5m. There are no neighbouring properties that overlook the pool. For outdoor dining, there is a wide choice of tables and chairs - on the shaded terrace, on the front lawn, and beside the wood-burning oven and barbecue. The 3 hectares (7.4 acres) of grounds are fully fenced for privacy. The lovely roofed terrace adjacent to the entrance door is extremely well equipped for long hours of relaxation with comfortable seating, a huge table, coffee and tea making equipment and a microwave.
Golf
The well-known golf course at Ugolino is within easy reach of Villa Santa Margherita.
Travel
A car is needed to explore the Chianti region, although the area immediately surrounding the villa is excellent for walking or cycling. The nearest airports are in Florence and Pisa, and Bologna airport is also within reach. A local driver is available for airport transfers, day tours and chauffeuring.
Distances
The villa is a scenic 6km drive from the lively small town of Greve in Chianti with its distinctive piazza. The town offers a variety of restaurants, cafes, a wine and olive oil tasting centre, banks, shops and a supermarket. There is a regular bus service to Florence, which is a convenient and relaxing way to reach the centre of the city. Siena is also within easy reach, along with San Gimignano and Castellina in Chianti.
Further details
On Saturday there is a weekly market in the piazza, and during the year there are seasonal festivals in the area: flowers, antiques, wine, and specialty foods. The location is at the mid-point of the Chianti wine trail and there are many vineyards that offer tastings and direct sales. A local cook can be hired to prepare and serve typical local dishes, on request.
