Owner profile
About the owner
My Italian family owned the Mill from the 1900's and built the Mill House in 1911 and my father grew up in the village when the Mill was the hub of activity and social life. By the 1980's when we visited on family holidays the Mill was derelict and in need of loving care.
We bought the Mill House back into the family in 1995 and the Mill a couple of years later. Together with our growing family, energetic parents and local builders iwe have spent several years restoring the properties into very comfortable accommodation still retaining all of the original features.
The last miller, who still lives locally, helped us to retain the old Mill machinery.
Staying at the Mill and Mill House is like living the real Italian country life - but with all the modern comforts of the 21st Century
Year purchased: 1995
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought the Mill and Mill House to help to preserve the history of this area. It was a bonus that they are set in the most beautiful, tranquil chestnut valley in the Garfagnana region of Tuscany. The Garfagnana is the real hidden Italy - family run restaurants, little medieval villages and towns, fabulous unspoilt walking areas and scenery - yet an hour from Lucca and its charms.
Unique benefits of the property
A real chance to get away from it all and to experience the Italian way of life - long lunches under the pergola, inexpensive authentic Tuscan restaurants, beautiful walks, relaxing by the pool, visits to local towns. We have had visitors who have not travelled far but have just rested and appreciated a slower pace of life, and others who have travelled to the sea, Florence and beyond.
The houses are perfect for groups and families to holiday together - very well equipped kitchens including bread makers, dishwashers etc and lovely places to eat outside make eating and cooking a pleasure.
Make our Italian home from home yours for a week or two and live the Italian life - you may find yourself not wanting to leave!
