Coast/Beach
From the apartment it's a 5 mins. drive down the mountain to the lake side village of Dongo. There are plenty of water sports activities around the lake with schools offering courses for sailing, windsurfing, kite-surfing and water-skiing. The best wind spots are usually around Dongo, Domaso and Colico. You can also hire sailing and motorboats, windsurfs and canoes. For something quieter you can also hire pedalos and rowing boats
Golf
The 18-hole golf course in Menaggio (Open from March to November) has an absolutely splendid view over the lake. It is worth going there just for afternoon tea.
Skiing
In winter northern Lake Como is ideal for ski or snowboarding with the lakeside roads being quiet and snow-free it's within easy reach of many ski centres. Madesimo and Barzio/Piani di Bobbio/Valtorta are just over thirty miles away. On Sundays when the roads are more crowded there is a coach from Colico to Madesimo. Many locals also go to centres like Chiesa-Valmalenco (just over 40 miles) and St Moritz in Switzerland (about 55m) as well as skiing and sledging in local valleys. There are also smaller centres like Giumello-Paglio (31 miles, especially good for cross-country skiing) and Margno-Betulle (28 miles with 7 pistes) but you need to check snow conditions.
Special interest holidays
In the village of Garzeno, the first weekend in July celebrates the feast day of San Pietro e Paolo. It’s a huge celebration in the village with diner served in the square to lots of singing and merriment.
Travel
Lake Como is serviced by three airports, all of them are between 1 to 2 hours drive from Garzeno. They are; Milan-Linate; Milan-Malpensa and Milan-Bergamo (Orio al Serio). The following airlines fly here; Alitalia; BMI; British Airways; Aer Lingus; Easy Jet; Ryan Air; Jet2 and FlyBe.
To make the most of your holiday we strongly recommend that you hire a car as getting around the lake without one is very difficult.

Guest comments
Thanks ever so much, we had a fantastic time. We really enjoyed staying in the apartment, it was big enough & cool enough even when the weather got warm, really well kitted out. The drive up from Dongo is er, interesting, but we got into the swing of Italian driving pretty quickly. Love the view of the mountains opposite & we enjoyed Garzeno's alleyways and byways. Our pretty basic italian was useful enough, but the villagers were really helpful. The folder of activities is excellent too' Moss Family
'Wow! We had the most amazing holiday - the apartment was so beautiful and spotlessly clean, and the view! We really loved the village and soon slotted in to the pace and way of life – everyone was so friendly and welcoming.' Ms Abbott Jun.
'The apartment was very warm, cosy well-equipped and we played many games of Cluedo! We liked the village very much - it was very quaint and rustic and we visited the bakery every morning- the locals were very friendly' The Welsh Family.
Owner profile
About the owner
I live in Surrey with my husband and daughter. My parents are Italian and so all my holidays as a youngster was spent in and around Lake Como visiting our many relatives.
Year purchased: 1960's
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
Casa Barella was built in the 1960’s by my father and his two brothers. They each owned an apartment where they lived. In the early 60’s, my father emigrated to England to marry my mother and the apartment then beacme our holiday home where we would come and visit regularly. In 2007 my brother and I decided we would like to share this little gem of a village with others. We completely renovated and modernised the apartment to a high standard. And so 50 years on Casa Barella (House of Barella) was born! We hope you enjoy our home in the mountains as much as we do
