This is a traditional house with brick vaulted ceilings in the heart of one of the oldest (pre-Roman) market towns of Abruzzo. Once a cobbler's house, it is now modernized and restored with gas central heating and all modern conveniences. Penne is a lively town with events throughout the year; it is also in a central position for both the vast beaches and the mountains and nature reserves of Abruzzo. It even has its own lake and aquatic bird reserve, just 20 mins walk from the house.

Accessibility
The house is not accessible for people with limited mobility due to the internal steps and stairs. The stone stairs in the house may also make it unsuitable for toddlers.

Coast/Beach
The Adriatic coast is 30-40 minutes drive away; north of Pescara is continuous sandy shelving beach for 100 kilometres, but very busy in the summer and you will need to pay for a parasol. South of Pescara the coast is more varied, from the shady pine woods immediately outside Pescara to the wilder stretches and cliffs further south.

Skiing
There are two mountain ranges in sight of Penne: the Maiella and the Gran Sasso. The Maiella has the ski slopes and schools at Passo Lanciano/Majeletta, about 45 minutes drive away; the Gran Sasso is closer, but the skiing is more extreme and may be unreachable from Penne in winter.

Travel
The nearest airport is Pescara, which is about 40 minutes drive. From the UK, flights to Pescara are run by Ryanair from Stansted. Public transport is good, cheap, and regular, but if you are using Penne as a central base to see the Abruzzo you will probably want to hire a car at the airport. It is also possible to fly to Rome and drive over the Appenines to Penne, around 2 1/2 hours on the motorway.

Distances
Penne is quite central to the Abruzzo and in easy driving distance of the capital, Pescara, the coast, and the mountains. The mountains include the many national parks and a great variety of wildlife, including bears. This is an ideal location for anyone who loves wildlife, birdwatching, and the countryside, but Penne is also a busy town with a lot going on - it even has an Olympic-scale swimming pool just outside the centre.

Further details
The closest restaurant is 2 minutes walk away from the house and there is another 4 within 5 minutes walk. Penne has banks, supermarkets and internet cafes, as well as a cathedral and archaeological museum. There is also a market every Saturday. We try to cover annual events such as the Palio, Easter celebrations, and 'Sheep Nights' on our own website.

Booking notes
Reservations can be made with a non-refundable 25% deposit. The balance must be received at least 14 days before arrival.
