Historical sightseeing is a given - Museo di Sperlonga, Castello di Itri, the antique handy crafts in Gaeta, Tivoli, Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este - a villa for cardinal d'Este, built from the shell of a Benedictine monastery. All between 20 minutes and about an hour away from Terracina. The cloister of Fossanova has an incredible architecural and spiritual beauty. The famous film 'Il nome della rosa' by Umberto Eco with Sean Connery was shot here. The monks still live and work in that monastery. You can buy their homemade wine, honey, olive oil and infusions. There are several medieval hill towns around Terracina, of which each one is famous for a different cultural event or food - Sermoneta for art galleries and concerts, Sezze Romano for the celebration of the artichoke and the procession with actors at Easter, Bassiano for its prosciutto and Maenza for its boletus edulis (funghi porcini) dishes.
