The apartments are situated in Ortigia, a square mile of island, which is the ancient heart of the city of Syracusa on the east coast of Sicily. Ortigia is constructed almost in its entirety in the baroque style, although many relics of its historical significance as a major port in Magna Graecia can be seen. Ortigia is also home to one of the finest Piazzas in Italy with a magnificent Duomo. The island has a vibrant community life, which celebrates festivals and the arts. It also has a number of excellent and reasonably priced restaurants and bars with friendly service. During the season there are 2 lidos from which you can swim in the sea, although access is possible year round from the free swimming point 3 minutes from the apartment. Our neighbours are Sicilian and very welcoming, and the local market has an abundance of freshly caught fish and superb local produce for the keen chef.

Saturday is the normal day for changeover, although we can be more flexible at quiet times of the year.

Bedrooms: 1 bedroom with double bed and ample cupboard space. French Doors to private outside shower. Bathroom with shower, WC, Basin and bidet. Living Room: Large living room with well equipped kitchen, dining table, stereo. Lots of music and books including guide books and dictionaries. Single bed available. Cleaning/towels/linen/maid service: Towels and linen included. Weekly clean included in price. |

Notes on accommodation
Heating and air conditioning. Travel cot and travel stairgate available, but the apartments are not child proof.
Outside
Friendly street with parking available nearby. Number 16 has a large roof terrace with table for 6 under shade and 2 sun loungers on small upper level. Sun all day and great to eat on - just upstairs from the kitchen. Number 18 has a private, outside shower.
Coast/Beach
During the season there is a lido 2 mins walk from the apartment, and year round swimming is available from the rocks, also nearby. There is a ferry across the bay from Ortigia to good sandy beaches, whilst Fontane Bianche and Aranella are a short drive from Siracusa. Pianeta de Gelsomineto, just past Cassibile is our favourite beach.
Travel
Catania airport is the nearest airport to Siracusa, either by bus or car, it takes about an hour. The bus stop in Siracusa is 10 mins by taxi from the apartment. Although you can spend an entire holiday very happily in Ortigia without a car, if you really want to enjoy the surrounding area and further afield, then a hire car is recommended and can be picked up at the airport.
Distances
Ortigia with all it has to offer, on your doorstep. Noto 30km. Modica 45km. Vendicari nature reserve 45km. Mt Etna 1 hour north of Catania.
Further details
Restaurants: We are serious eaters and have never had a Bad meal in Ortigia. A few of our favourite places are… Epicuro on Via Eolo for pizza, Do Scogghiu in Via Scina for pasta, Spizzica on the Lungomare for lunch outside with a sea view, good salads and pasta, Porto Marina for great Sicilian food – slightly more expensive, La Terrazza for fantastic view of the harbour, Osteria da Mariano in Vicolo Zuccala for typical Sicilian fare – don’t expect a menu!
Shops: Most of them close between 1 and 4 pm. La Solaria in Via Roma for good wine. urospar in Corso Umberto on the mainland – nearest reasonable supermarket. Market next to Tempio di Apollo for excellent fish and produce. Most local shops in Ortigia are OK and not the same rip off as UK corner shops!

A deposit of £100 per week is required at the time of booking, the balance is due 2 calendar months before arrival

‘Dear Eils this is just to say, belatedly, thanks for the loan of your apartment in Ortygia. The apartment was exceptionally spacious attractive, and very good value for money. I expected a lot of Ortygia and it surpassed these expectations, very beautiful, elegant and civilised. We visited Noto and other places, great local transport, went to the beach and the local bathing rocks and my wife and daughter spent a lot of time in the fantastic market, making friends and buying food, we brought quite a bit back.
