A 19th Century Tuscan Farmhouse offering bed & breakfast, Podere Vicoferaldi, with its magnificent country views, nestles in the Chianti hills above Rufina. It also has two beautiful flats in a converted barn. It is perfectly located for those who not only wish to relax but also visit Florence and the surrounding areas. There are some marvellous restaurants in Rufina (15 minutes by car), with its easy shopping. We have 16 hectares of land with a "buttery" and private spring, a hectare of Chianti D.O.C. ‘Rufina’ vines and 640 olive trees. You may walk or ride on horseback through magnificent woods, sample excellent extra virgin olive oil and Chianti wine or perhaps pick fruit from the trees after you've breakfasted on the large sun terrace. There is a bus from Vicoferaldi to Rufina station with frequent trains to Florence (30 mins). It is less costly and tiring to catch a train to Florence, as parking is very expensive and hard to find and the station is right in the city centre.

Changeover day
Our preferred changeover day is Saturday but other days may be considered depending on bookings. Guests must vacate rooms by 10.00am and new arrivals will only be able to book in after 4.00pm.
Notes on accommodation
The farmhouse has wood central heating in the winter and there is central heating (oil) in the flats.
We have created two pretty bedrooms for children or adults.
There are 640 olive trees and a vineyard where you can wander, plus wonderful walks through the countryside, trout fishing in nearby lakes and horse riding, so there is plenty for children to do.
Accessibility
On the gound floor of the farmhouse we have built a very comfortable and luxurious double bedroom with a large bathroom for disabled people. This has its own approach slope via the private side garden and is designed to accommodate a wheelchair. You can sit outside and enjoy your meals whilst admiring the fantastic scenery. There is also an extremely large terrace alongside the house which allows disabled people to enjoy the sunshine.
Outside
The houses are surrounded by trees and bushes with many different roses and other plants in the various flower beds. We have a small side garden but as this is a hilly area, we have created terraces or patios with outdoor furniture and a barbecue for our guests. We are building a lovely private pool with fantastic views across the countryside and its own sun terrace. This should be ready by June 2007.
Special interest holidays
If you would like to learn Italian the owner, who is English, would be prepared to give you lessons. This is a wonderful area for bird watching or for guests who would like to watch wild animals such as pheasants, deer, porcupine and wild boar.
Travel
Florence Airport is about 40 kms and the closest to us.
Car hire is recommended and there are many different companies including Avis and Hertz.
The little station at Rufina is about 15 minutes from Podere Vicoferaldi and there is a local bus that stops by our farm.

Distances
We are about 15 minutes by car from Rufina village and only 30 minutes from the outskirts of Florence. You should allow at least 45 minutes to drive right into the city. There are many places of interest near here including a considerable number of villages and towns with archaeological excavations from the Etruscan and other historical periods. The Mugello area includes many old churches and castles and the Medici family's summer resort, the Castle at Poppi, Dicomano.

Owner profile
About the owner
I'm from London but have been living in Florence for 36 years as I'm married to a Sicilian. I love the Tuscan countryside so we purchased a beautiful farm in the hills 1/2 hr from the city which allows us to enjoy the best of both worlds. At the age of 55 I had to learn a new job - taking care of the Chianti D.O.C. RUFINA in our vinyard and the 640 olive trees. At the age of 63 I am working harder now than I did when I was younger!
Still it keeps you fit....The garden takes up a lot of my time as I have to cut the grass with the strimer and then the flowers have to be watered daily in the hot summer, on top of this there is the pool to keep in order. Thank goodness for my robot "Charlie" as he cleans the pool much better than me! Now there's the pretty little cottage at Cecina.
Year purchased: 2001
Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
It took me 10 years to find a property I fell in love with and this is Vicoferaldi with the stunning views across the woods and Tuscan hills. The fantastic Rufina wine from our vinyard and the wonderful extra virgin olive oil from our 640 trees. We are only 30 minutes by car or train from the centre of Florence and have this glorious countryside rich in rivers and waterfalls where one can escape the crazy crowds in the cities. We are surrounded by great trattorias and pizzerias with excellent shopping in the local supermarkets. In the autumn we can collect the chestnuts off the trees on the way home and eat them with the local honey and cheese. There are lots of village fairs near here and there's always something of interest to visit.
Unique benefits of the property
Vicoferaldi lies at the height of 450 metres which is a blessing in summer when its so hot in the local valley or Florence as its cool here in the hills. There are fantastic walks near here with wonderful views, and at the bottom of Mount Jove you can catch the local train into Florence and leave your car in the free car park at Rufina Station. If you enjoy Italian food our area offers some of the finest restaurants which are cheaper than those in Florence, and if you enjoy shopping the "Barbarino Outlet" is only 30 minutes away near the lake where one can wind surf. We have a beautiful pool complete with gazebo and bar where we serve cold drinks and sometimes we organize barbecues for our guests. If you like to ride there is a riding school 2 klms away and fishing in the lake.
