Known locally as Paradiso, the villa is on an ancient Roman road on the wooded flanks of the Apennines; it looks down onto Barga, a mediaeval town on a hill, and across to the Marble Mountains. It is totally secluded, but a car is essential. The garden and woods are terraced; the pool sits above a steep little olive grove, with a view of the valley and the mountains beyond.

Notes on accommodation
The house has very efficient gas central heating in all rooms. Air conditioning units in principal bedroom, living room, kitchen/dining room.
Because access road is very rarely used by anyone except us, it is extremely safe for children.

Accessibility
The final 300 yard stretch of the ancient Roman road to the house is steep, relatively narrow and must be driven with care.
Not suitable for wheelchairs.
Outside
Terrace with wonderful views down onto Barga and across to the Apuan Alps; teak dining table and chairs, loungers, deckchairs. Terraced gardens with woods above and beyond. The pool is three terraces higher, above a little olive grove; the panoramic views from it are breathtaking.
Coast/Beach
Viareggio and the Ligurian coast are about 1.5 hours drive.
Special interest holidays
The Apuan Alps, aka the Marble Mountains, provide excellent walking and rock-climbing.
Barga has a pocket-sized opera house and holds a small international music festival in July and August, with open-air concerts in the squares. It is also crowned with an exquisite C11th cathedral. Della Robbia worked in Fornaci di Barga and several works are in Barga.
The beautiful walled city of Lucca is 40 minutes drive.
Travel
Pisa airport is about 1.5 hours by road, via Lucca.
Distances
1.5 miles to Barga.
25 miles to Lucca.
One hour forty minutes drive to Florence.
Further details
There are art galleries, antique shops and a couple of decent clothing boutiques in Barga; also a market every Saturday. Food shopping is excellent. The restaurants in town are OK but not spectacular, though there are very good places close by. Full details on booking.
