Piccola Perla is a charming apartment ideally located in San Antonin, Castello. Easily accessible from both Arsenale and San Zaccaria vaporetto stops. Although it is so close to Riva Schiavoni this is the real Venice. An external door leads from a quiet lane into the pretty courtyard surrounded by the walls of C15 buildings. A ground floor conversion, the bedroom and sitting room are decorated in sumptuous Venetian style. Perfect location for Carnival and Art Biennale 2011.The inclusive kitchen offers facilities for self catering, and the area is well provided with patisserie, fishmonger, baker, supermarket and delicious restaurants and cafes.

Notes on accommodation
Suitable for children and older guests (not infirm) as all on ground floor. Enclosed courtyard, secure door. Electric heating/cooking and water all inclusive. Fans and mosquito nets. Sofa bed useful if two friends want separate beds. This needs to be folded away to have use of the sitting room.

Not suitable for wheelchairs.Suggest older guests are aware Venice has many bridges with steps and incurs a lot of walking.
Outside
Private courtyard approached from locked external door on the street,which leads to the entrance into the sitting room. The courtyard contains an ancient well now full of plants. Climbing plants clothe the walls and the local washing flutters above. Garden chairs around a marble table, offer respite with a complementary bottle of Prosecco provided. Outdoor containers for suitcases and wellingtons for aqua alta.
Coast/Beach
The nearest beaches at the Lido, 10 min vaporetto journey from the Arsenale stop. Alberoni beach with sand dunes (take bus B from Lido stop) Also boat trips on the Brenta Canal visiting Renaissance villas. Ferry service to Croatia and Greece.
Golf
There is a famous golf course at Alberoni on the Lido.

EasyJet/BMI baby/Jet2/BA to Marco Polo airport, 75 mins by Aliliguna boat(25 euro return) stops Arsenale, or 30 mins by water taxi (approx 100 euros) Ryanair Treviso airport coach to Piazzale Roma 1 hour (9 euros). no. 51/41 vaporetto to San Zaccaria 25 mins. Orient Express and Eurostar from St Pancras. Cheaper car parking on mainland in Mestre. Only car parking in Venice at Piazzale Roma. Vaporetti serve all the island.

San Marco 10 minutes walk. Carpaccio paintings at Scuola San Giorgio degli Schiavoni around the corner from apartment. Venice walkable, offers on vaporetti tickets.1 week E50incl islands Lido, Palestrina, Murano,+ bus on Lido. Half hour journey to Islands of Burano and Torcello. By Eurostar train Treviso 20 mins. Vicenza, Padua 30 mins. Verona 1 1/2 hour. Mountains: Cortina for skiing 2 hours. Veneto wine tours. Boat trips to villas and gardens on the Brenta Canal Palladian villas E 75.

Passing the Doge's Palace, behind Vivaldi's church La Pieta, San Antonin has a complete collection of local shops, fishmonger, baker, wine merchant and two mini supermarkets. Also cafes. A large Punto supermarket nearby. Famous restaurants Al Cova and Corte Sconta in the next streets.Osteria ae Spezie nearest. Post office in Via Garabaldi.Banks beyond San Marco. At Carnival childrens fair on the Riva. Redentore in July. Regatta Historica in September from Arsenale. For fans of Donna Leon, Ponte Greci is the next bridge by the questura. The Art and Architecture Biennale held minutes away at Arsenale and Giardini. Good access for the Lido.

About the owner
Sometimes a dream comes true. I asked myself 'If I could live anywhere ,where would I choose?' There was no hesitation 'Venice'. My two daughters Thea and Olivia had grown up. I was looking for a project and Piccola Perla was perfect, a little pearl. I found it surprisingly straightforward to buy and had such fun sourcing beautiful artifacts, many found in my own house in Cheltenham! I originally trained at art school and many of my friends are artists. I personally run the site, its fun to hear the pleasure of guests' visits, many meeting my neighbours who are so nice and friendly.It is so relaxing in San Antonin, yet close to San Marco and the Arsenale. It feels like home, I visit often, practicing my Italian. Now in its 8th year I feel a little like a Venetian.

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
Surprisingly Venice seems a village, I recognise people as they go about their business. San Antonin is just behind the Campo Bandieri e Moro where Vivaldi was baptized, locally supported concerts and feste abound. Neighbours range from the president of marine archeology (who eats in the local restaurant every night) to a teacher and plumber. I hear a singer rehearsing opera.Smell scent of fresh bread from the corner bakery, expresso at the cafe run by the local ex policeman and his wife. How is it possible to walk down the street without being kissed and 'ciao bella'. Visitors are so surprised that San Marco and the Riva are minutes away yet this part of Castello is so relaxing.It helps to be close to vaporetto stops, shopping at the local supermarket, passing Carpaccio paintings. Bliss!
Unique benefits of the property
Luckily Piccola Perla is easy to find, so close to 2 vaporetto stops. Of course ideal for the Biennale near to Arsenale and Giardini. Local children's feste yet 10 mins to St Marks grand parade at Carnival Piccola Perla is unique because it is unusual to have a private courtyard, with a security door making it safe for children. This gives another 'room' in a city where space is premium,where you can sip a complimentary Prosecco. At midnight the only sound the bells from San Marco, San Giovanni and San Martino. (They don't ring through the night).
Its easy to return for lunch bought from the deli in the supermarket, no stairs to climb if exhausted from all the walking. No traffic, just a fantastic boat service and a good pair of shoes, wellies provided for aqua alta.
Yes it is romantic.
