Outside
Old stone walls and the historic remains of 18th century farm buildings are surrounded by Irish wildflowers and bordered by a little stream tumbling down from the southern slopes of Lugnaquilla Mountain. Up until a few decades ago this was a working farm - and the outbuildings housed a couple of horses for working in the fields and forests. Now all you can hear is the trickle of the stream and the birds!
Golf
Aughavannagh Cottage is within easy reach of some of Ireland’s greatest golf courses with a wide variety of golfing venues to choose from. Challenging coastal links and beautiful parkland settings are all near by. For instance Druids Glen, recent hosts of the Irish Open is a short 40 min drive. Even closer are spectacular courses at Glenmalure, Woodenbridge, Arklow, Roundwood, Djouce and Coolattin. At many of the courses green fees are surprisingly reasonable, particularly during the week and the keen golfer will find the Irish golfing experience refreshingly informal and sociable. There is an almost overwhelming choice in the sheer variety of quality courses to choose from. For those who would like to play a different venue every day, the world famous Mount Juliet and the magnificent K Club (home of the Ryder Cup in 2007) are both less than one and a half hours away.
Travel
Aughavannagh Cottage just a short distance from ferry and airports making it perfect for visitors from overseas. Dublin Airport (90 mins) Dun Laoghaire Ferryport (70 mins) and Rosslare Ferryport (90 mins) help avoid a long and tiring drive upon arrival
Further details
The Wicklow Mountains is one of Ireland most scenic areas. The area is a walker’s paradise with countless opportunities to get away from it all in beautiful unspoilt mountain scenery. Whether you want a gentle stroll in lovely surroundings or prefer a more energetic all day hike there is always a wide choice for every taste. Waterfalls, mountain lakes and deep glaciated valleys all provide a wonderful backdrop for walkers of every ability. Deer, foxes and hares can all be seen in the quiet glens and kestrels, merlin and peregrine falcons can also be spotted with a bit of luck. There is little in the way of man- made settlement in the mountains but with a bit of carefull planning it should be possible to ensure that your hillwalking day ends at a good pub! Lugnaquilla, Wicklows highest peak, rises to over 3,000 feet just behind Aughavannagh Cottage and provides an exhilerating challenge for the energetic and experienced who will be rewarded with spectacular views from the summit. There are several routes to the top and it isn’t difficult to plan a hike which ascends one route and descends by way of a different track. If you descend via Glenmalure you'll almost certainly end up in The Glenmalure Lodge pub!
The Wicklow Way is one of Europe’s most beautiful way marked trails. The Way begins just south of Dublin City and stretches deep into the mountains, meandering for over 80 miles through countless spectacular glens and valleys. Aughavannagh Cottage is ideally placed on the mid –way point, making it the perfect location for exploring the Way without having to change accommodation every day. The route traverses old military roads, pilgrim trails and disused mountain routes. The scenery is consistently breathtaking and there is a real sense of discovering a hidden Ireland of sleepy little villages, ancient monastic settlements and historic sites associated with Irelands fascinating past.
