‘Irish Lights’ was built by and for us and created, designed and maintained to a very high specification as a family home. Two years ago the house was extended to offer more bedroom space and a large (9 metre wide) sunroom with spectacular sea views. Outside there is a large lawned area for relaxing or running around, with a permanent BBQ for your use. We called the house "Irish Lights" as on a clear night you can see the light from three lighthouses - Old Head of Kinsale, Galley Head and Fastnet far out into the ocean. Within a 5km radius there are great sandy beaches to choose from, some with blue flag status. Dunmore House and Inchedonny hotels are nearby for good quality bar meals and fine dining. Clonakilty, with its lively music and pub scene and wide range of shops is just 5km away. Inchedonny Hotel also offers the added attraction of spa facilities including a saltwater pool. Golfing, horse riding, surfing, fishing and whale watching are also great day trips nearby.

Notes on accommodation
Irish Lights is great for socialising and relaxing making it especially good for larger families with children or grandparents, or two families sharing. The spacious sunroom, with underfloor heating has beautiful sea views across the rolling countryside and spectacular sunsets out to the west. The night skies are wonderfully dark so use the telescope to spot Saturn's rings or look out for shooting stars with the naked eye.

Three lounges offer the opportunity to "hide away" with a good book from our extensive library of Irish authors with further settees on the spacious upstairs landing and in the master bedroom.

Gas & electricity are included in the rental as are both wood and coal, located in the garage, for the multi-fuel stove. The heating is on a timer than can be set for personal preference. Water is on a combi boiler system and therefore very plentiful! There are no additional charges.

Accessibility
We regret that this property is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Outside
The gardens are to the front, rear and side of the property and are laid to grass - great for running around on. There is plenty parking on the hard area out to the house front. Stored in the garage is some play equipment for children to use. The large deck area gives an additional raised space for relaxing or playing and offers stunning sea views. Alternatively sit in the warmth of the sunroom with the concertina doors fully open. There are no other houses around the property so this is a perfect place for relaxing and unwinding.

Golf
If golfing is your passion then is is the place to be. With the ocean as your backdrop on a number of courses, golf clubs are within easy reach at Bandon, Bantry, Clonakilty, Kinsale (which must be amongst some of the best Atlantic views in Ireland) and Skibbereen. There is also a golf driving range at nearby Roscarberry. Phone: 023 8848054.

Travel
Cork airport is about 50km away taking about an hour. Rosslare and Dublin ferry ports are about 200km taking about 4 hours though this will be significantly decreased as new motorways are near completion. Car hire is essentially for visiting the area as there is no public transport to the village from Clonakilty. From Clonakilty there is a regular daily bus service to Cork and further west to Skibbereen and Bantry.

Distances
The local pub and shop is 400m away with Clonakilty at 5km

Further details
A local shop, post office and pub are within walking distance in Ardfield viallage. Clonakilty is 5km with banks, supermarkets and local shops. It also hosts a Thursday Farmers Market. The town is home to the Michael Collins memorial statue in Emmet Square. We provide you with a complimentary copy of the weekly "Southern Star" which provide invaluable details about local events.

Before you go we recommend that you visit the sites http://www.corkkerrytourism.ie and http://www.clonakilty.ie both of which give comprehensive information about what's on while you are there.

Cork city has plenty to offer so look up http://tourism.cometocork.ie. If you love fish you must visit the English market which offers a wide range of delicious foods.

Places of interest nearer Irish LIghts are the Drombeg stone circle on the way to the pretty sea village Glandore, great for a sotp over and enjoy a drink overlooking a spectacular deep sea inlet.

A visit to the Clonakilty Model Village and a "train ride" through the town is great for children or a visit to the homeplace of Michael Collins

Owner profile

Geoffrey O'Donoghue

About the owner
As a child Geoff spent all his summers here, staying with relatives on a farm near Castlefreke. In 1996 Karen and Geoff started building the house during our holidays with other family members, completing it in 1999. So for us this is more than a holiday home -as Geoff's parents live nearby we are regular visitors, especially now as we have two young daughters. Over the years, we have stayed in many holiday lets some of which have been a disappointment and others, which for the want of a little effort could have been so much better. So we have made sure there are all the comforts and conveniences of home for when we stay and we want your first impression to be wow! Our feedback is that you exactly feel that and we get great pleasure from that with many returning again and again.

Year purchased: 1996

Why the owner chose a home in this location
One of the key attractions for us of the area has to be that you have the experience of being out in the quiet countryside and as you walk along the fuscia lined lanes you can get all the isolation you want. Likewise you have a great choice of local beaches which will allow those young and older a range of experiences such as exploring rock pools, flying kites, surfing, swimming in the Atlantic ocean-and for Dads, building sandcastles. If you are into fishing there are numerous places you can go and boat hire is locally available-if fact there are a great range activities nearby-more than enough to make sure that children are ready for a sound night’s sleep. We use local babysitters allowing us time out to enjoy a night in Clonakilty with its great music scene and restaurants.

Unique benefits of the property
The access to the range of beaches and easy access to Clonakilty makes this an ideal holiday area. The most spectacular feature of the house is the sunroom with its 4metre wide opening concertina doors leading you out on to the large deck. Despite there being two other lounges downstairs we spend most of our time in the sunroom just looking out on the Atlantic and watching some fantastic sunsets. In winter you might want to stoke up the multi fuel stove with a good book or a glass of whatever. For those of you with an interest in the night skies there is a telescope for you to spy on Saturn’s rings and look out for shooting stars or satellites. On a clear night you will also see the light from three lighthouses, Kinsale, Galley Head and Fastnet-hence the name Irish Lights.
