The Kingdom of Morocco is an African country covering an area of
approximately 710,000 sq km. It is bordered to the east by Algeria and its
southern coast extends to the edge of the Western Sahara, while its
population of 31 million people mostly inhabit northern regions. The Atlas
mountain range occupies a vast swathe of Morocco, and the land between the
mountains and the Atlantic coast consists of well irrigated and fertile
plains. The dramatic landscape of the Atlas mountains gradually diminishes
towards the south and the rivers that flow from them through deep gorges dry
up as they meet the barren, sandy waste-lands of the mighty, arid Sahara
Desert. Morocco is the ideal starting point for a journey through Africa as
it's a stone's throw from the Spanish coast, and hotels and
guesthouses in Morocco are a plentiful, popular form of holiday
accommodation for travellers of any age.
The weather in the coastal regions of Morocco is good virtually all year
round with the temperatures creeping up the further south you travel. The
cooler months between October and April are particularly busy with tourists
avoiding the searing heat of the high season, yet trekking holidays are
often taken during the hotter months with
holiday villas in Morocco being snapped up very quickly. Skiing holidays
in Morocco are not such an ironic concept as the Atlas mountains offer
snowy, almost Arctic, conditions from December to March in stark contrast to
a more typical image of Africa's heat and dust.
Despite being only an hour's ferry trip away from Spain, Morocco seems a
world away from Europe. With a deeply traditional, Islamic culture that is
steeped in history, this is a fascinating country where ancient beliefs and
customs exist happily alongside modern, cosmopolitan attitudes. Casablanca,
Marrakech and Rabat are all cities that immediately conjure up the unique
essence of ancient African customs with roots firmly planted in medieval
times. The stunning architecture of these beautiful places sits comfortably
alongside the many open-air markets where intricate jewellery and woodwork
is sold as well as leather and rugs, all crafted by locals and extremely
popular with tourists as eternal reminders of this exciting, romantic
country. The natural, physical beauty of Morocco is diverse, ranging from a
Mediterranean coastal environment through scenic mountain landscapes to the
empty wilderness of the Sahara, where a
holiday apartment in Morocco will give you the perfect base from where
you can explore this mysterious corner of Africa and discover the vacation
destination of your dreams.
