Discover Canada - home of winter holiday wonderland and summer vacation sensation

Country Facts And Traveller Information

Canada is the world's second largest country covering an area of almost 10 million sq km. It is situated north of the USA and extends 7700 km from the Pacific west coast to the Atlantic east. The 30 million strong population is a multi-cultural society of native Canadian, French and British people who are mainly concentrated along the southern border regions leaving much of this vast nation uninhabited and unspoilt. The diversity of Canada's natural environments is unbelievable, ranging from Arctic tundra in the far north, across prairies, lakes and mountains to rainforest, desert, fjords and lush orchards in the south. The Rocky Mountains are a major geographical feature of Western Canada while the east is home to many of the country's larger cities, as well as its most visited natural phenomena, Niagara Falls. The ancient glacial landscape of the Canadian Shield covers much of the northern territories, the furthest parts of which remain frozen almost permanently, and the abundance of mountain scenery provides endless holiday opportunities for skiing enthusiasts, with top quality facilities, holiday homes and ski chalets in Canada catering specifically for winter activity vacations.

With eight vegetation zones, Canada's collection of native flora is incredible, dominated by great forests of indigenous trees, including the sugar maple - the national symbol, and an equally stunning array of endemic fauna is supported by these habitats - from polar bears to grizzly bears, from coyote to caribou. Many wildlife environments are protected within the boundaries of Canada's 39 national parks and 145 national historic sites, and with 13 areas of such natural significance that they have UN World Heritage status, Canada has made conservation an extremely important issue.

The climate in Canada is largely influenced by latitude in that the further north you travel, the colder it becomes, with more than two-thirds of the country experiencing long, hard winters. Average January temperatures can plunge to -18 degrees Celsius, meaning that July and August are the warmest months, especially in the south when the mercury climbs to the upper 20's. Both western and eastern coasts can be wet during winter months, while the prairies of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and eastern Alberta are dry all year. Obviously, timing a holiday in Canada depends on individual requirements, so freezing temperatures won't be a problem if you're looking for a skiing chalet in British Columbia from where you intend to make full use of the ski slopes! For touring vacations, late spring, summer and autumn are the ideal times to investigate the breathtaking extent of Canada's natural history and cultural heritage, with something to appeal to people of all ages and physical capabilities.

Nova Scotia is a holiday destination that can offer some of Canada's most impressive examples of natural history, with a coastal landscape of towering cliffs and picturesque bays as well as Lunenburg, the UNESCO World Heritage site. Spectacular scenery provides a perfect backdrop to any type of holiday; from action-packed kayaking and hiking to less strenuous world-class golf or whale-watching, the potential to discover the vacation of a lifetime can be realised here. With a wealth of seafood restaurants, impressive museums and historical architecture, idyllic weather and beaches and luxurious vacation rentals in Nova Scotia, you are guaranteed Canadian warmth and hospitality at its best.

A holiday home in British Columbia can offer year round opportunities to sample the diversities of this magnificent part of Canada. Explore its rich variety of habitats, from forests and grasslands to wetlands and lakes, or take in the crisp air and awesome magnitude of the Rocky Mountains. With its heritage of native culture, the towns are crammed with museums and art galleries, and four national parks can provide a glimpse of this country's wide range of mammals, birds and plant life. With the Purcell, Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges as well as the Rockies, winter sport and adventure are unlimited with some of the best skiing in North America to be had at the Apex Mountain resort, 405 km east of Vancouver. Alternatively, a skiing chalet in Quebec will make the ideal base to relax after a day on the slopes of an altogether different but no less breathtaking mountain paradise that offers potential for activity based vacations all year round. With opportunities for a range of water sports as well as a golfing holiday, accommodation in Quebec makes the perfect location from where the sheer size and staggering beauty of Canada can be truly appreciated.
