Cottages and House in Glossa, Skopelos, Sporades Islands, Greece
Property description
Set on the edge of the village of Glossa, the property has a cluster of three holiday cottages. They are within hailing distance of each other but each is detached and secluded with its own character and quiet secluded outside spaces. Part of the great charm of Glossa is that it doesn't try to be charming or traditional. It just is. It is large enough to have a life of its own and to absorb the visitors in the summer. There are plenty of tavernas and shops, but there is nowhere offering an English breakfast or even a foreign newspaper - you must go to Skopelos town for that. Luckily the narrow cobbled or paved streets were made for donkey traffic; they are bordered on both sides by traditional buildings and so there is no prospect of the village ever becoming a standard tourist haven as cars in most of the village simply cannot be accommodated. Flights of steps link the streets with each other. Shops, tavernas and bus-stop are within 10 minutes walk.

Notes on prices
Prices are per property per week in euros.
We are always happy to discuss discounts for long lets, but remember that winter lets involve significantly increased heating costs, so the reduced amount needs to take this into account. Winter prices include supply of all fuel, i.e. logs, gas and electricity.
Changeover day
Our changeover day is flexible. In summer the direct flights to Skiathos tend to be mostly Friday and Wednesday, but out of season if you are travelling via Athens or Thessaloniki it could be any day.

About the area
Accessibility
From the bus-stop in Glossa, you can reach the property along the little road which runs centrally through the village, past most of the shops and restaurants, which has some slopes but no steps.
However when you get to the property, there are three steps down into the main courtyard and from there, level access to the Old Wine Store, 5 steps up to the front door of Eleanora's House, and about 20 more steps down then up again to reach Clifftop Cottage.
Outside
Clifftop Cottage has a very large balcony to the west, equipped with large wooden table and chairs, and to the south a sun terrace with sun loungers and shower.
Eleanora's House has two large private balconies both with table and chairs, and a south and west-facing sun terrace with small table and 4 chairs, and 2 sun loungers. A perfectly placed fan palm means that on the sun terrace you have a choice of sun or shade for most of the day.
The old Wine Store has a small semi-secluded patio at the front, equipped with small metal table and chairs, and a south-facing sun terrace at the side with sun loungers and a small table.
There is a pretty central courtyard between the three properties.
Coast/Beach
The nearest beach, in Loutraki harbour, is 25 minutes walk, or 5 minutes by bus or car. There are many beautiful beaches on the south of the island which are reachable by bus, and several very quiet and pretty beaches on the north side of the island. You can reach these in a walking time of one hour, or you need a car or taxi.
The pretty little monastery of Aghios Iannis, the church on the rock from the film 'Mamma Mia' is also reachable in about 90 minutes walk and with a nice beach too.
Special Interest Holidays
We provide picture - maps for walkers, so you can go on self-guided walks, confident that you are not likely to get lost! All our guides give you an idea of how much shade you can expect, how long you can expect each walk to take, and pictures of points of interest along the way.
Our walker's picture-maps cover routes ranging from half an hour to five and a half hours, and most times in between. There are hills and steps in all of the walks, but none of them is difficult.
How to get there
The nearest airport is Skiathos. From there is it 5 minutes by taxi to the ferry port, and 15 minutes on the hydrofoil ferry to the port of Glossa. We can meet you there, and it is 5 minutes in a taxi or bus to the property in Glossa.
Car hire is not necessary. Most people like to hire a car for one or two days to explore the beaches which are not on the bus route, but you don't need to.
Distances
Skopelos town is about 30 kilometres away and reachable in one hour on the bus. The bus route is itself a lovely trip with beautiful sea and mountain scenery along the way. You can drive to Aghios Iannis in 20 minutes. But for a peaceful holiday it is perfectly possible to stay in the Glossa-Loutraki area, which has everything you need in the way of shops, restaurants, beaches, and a children's playground by the harbour in Loutraki.
Further Details
There are plenty of shops and tavernas in the village, and a couple of very nice restaurants, the Maestrali and the Agnanti. There are more tavernas, bars, and fish restaurants in the little port of Loutraki. Some of the larger beaches have small restaurants close by. Some of the large beaches have sun loungers and umbrellas, the smaller ones do not.

About the Owner
We are Jo and Roger. We first came to Glossa in 1999, bought a house here in 2003 and then created a business selling houses and land, and offering holiday rentals, based on what we have learned over the years. We have developed our properties so each has its own character and atmosphere, but all are equipped with the sort of things we would have liked during our years of spending holidays in various Greek islands - so you have snorkel and masks, beach towels and beach umbrellas so you can travel light and you will never be stuck for a corkscrew or pair of scissors! We own Clifftop Cottage, Eleanora's House and the Old Wine Store, and manage Villa Maria, Harbourside Apartments and Roosevelt Villas on behalf of our friends Nikos and Ianna who own them. We are always here to help!
Year property purchased: 2003
Why this location?
The Greek island of Skopelos is the second in the chain called The Sporades (scattered islands). Closest to the mainland is Skiathos and the nearest airport, but in summer 2012 Ryanair is offering cheap flights from Stansted to Thessaloniki and we can supply a factsheet for travel from there. There are beautiful beaches and pine covered mountain walks – something for everyone. The climate is kinder than in Crete and the southern Aegean. Part of the charm of Glossa is that it doesn`t try to be charming or traditional. It just is. It is large enough to have a life of its own and to absorb the visitors in the summer. As most of these are mainland Greeks, there is nowhere offering an English breakfast or even a foreign newspaper - you must go to Skopelos town for that.
What are the unique benefits of the property?
Glossa sits on a hillside looking over the sea towards Skiathos, and down to the delightful little harbour of Loutraki where Harbourside Apartments are. Luckily the narrow streets were made for donkey traffic; they are bordered on both sides by traditional buildings, and so there is no prospect of the village ever becoming a standard tourist haven as cars in most of the village simply cannot be accommodated. Connecting the few streets are steps, some of them long and steep. Our three properties are at the end of the village with no road going past, and so no passing traffic noises. In the evening it is very peaceful, and all you will hear is the 'bloop-bloop' of the Scops Owl, although you may be awoken in the morning by the crowing of our neighbour's cockerels!
