Outside
The house is situated on a large plot in a traditional Greek fishing village. It has a pretty front garden with roses and palms and a covered veranda. At the rear of the property there is a veranda with a large table and chairs, several deckchairs plus 2 sun loungers. The rest of the garden is laid to paving with pots and has pomigranites and almonds trees. From the veranda you can see glimpses of the sea and the local harbour is a 2 minute stroll. Our gardener grows his vegetables on the plot of land alongside the house that belongs to us and will allow you to pick some of the produce.
Coast/Beach
Lemnos is renowned for having some of the finest beaches in the Aegean. Numerous glorious sandy beaches can be reached by car. Nefgatis is the nearest (10 mins) is a large expanse of sandy beach 2 kms long so is never crowded. All beaches have safe bathing especially for children with good tavernas on the beach. Details about Lemnos island and directions to many beaches and places of interest are provided at the house.
Travel
Direct flights from Gatwick to Lemnos can be purchased from Thomas Cook. Also with Aegean Airlines from Stansted & Olympic Airlines from Heathrow both via Athens. The airport in Lemnos is 10kms away (15 mins in a car) from the house. Cars can be hired from the airport but are best booked in advance. If you require car hire or transfers via the airport this can be pre booked and paid for on arrival and we can assist you with this. Taxis cost approx 15 euros each way.
Distances
The house is within walking distance of 2 local shops where you can buy most things, and 3 good Tavernas. Marthas is a newly refurbished Taverna, 5 min stroll, another overlooks the harbour (3 mins) and there is a specialist fish taverna (4 mins).
Myrina is the main town approx 20 minutes drive away where there is a large choice of tavernas, cafes and shops. The senic harbour is overlooked by a Byzantine castle perched on a craggy promontory overlooking the towns 2 beaches.
Further details
Lemnos is an island with no mass tourism where the friendly Greek people go about their everyday life. Outside of the main town the land is given to agriculture, vineyards and corn fields with cattle occupying large areas. There are however more remote, glorious beaches and villages worth exploring by car. Don’t be surprised to see wild turkeys and tortoises on your travels.
If you like good Greek food and pleasant friendly people then you will be happy in Lemnos. If you need organised entertainment, lots of high profile tourist attractions or jet-skis and McDonalds then you will be very disappointed.
