Eftihia (Happiness) is our heavenly holiday home in the quiet village of Kokkino Horio (red village) on the north west coast of Crete, less than one hour by car from Chania airport. Eftihia faces west (beautiful sunsets) with fabulous views of the sea and mountains from all rooms. The gorgeous plunge pool (2m wide x 1m deep) on the main terrace is ideal for children and adults alike. The nearest village to Kokkino Horio (less than 5 minutes away by car) is Plaka. A larger village than Kokkino Horio, Plaka has tavernas and kafenios set around the village square and two well stocked mini marts (village shops), very friendly and helpful. Two of the tavernas are open all year round. A couple of minutes from Plaka is the village of Almirida with its beautiful sandy beach, shops and tavernas. Another 10 minutes or so by car brings you to Kalives which is a much bigger village than Almirida with just about every sort of shop, banks and long expanse of sandy beach with tavernas.

Changeover day
The most popular arrival/departure day has always been a Tuesday when most charter flights run from the UK to Chania and Heraklion. However with EasyJet now providing a service to Heraklion, changeover days can be flexible.

Bedrooms: Master bedroom on first floor with king size bed and en suite bathroom.
Bedrooms 2 and 3 on ground floor, king size bed and twin beds respectively.
All bedrooms have fitted wardrobes, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and balconies with fabulous sea views.
Bathrooms: En suite bathroom to master bedroom with basin, shower, bidet and wc.
Bathroom on ground floor with basin, bath with shower attachment and wc.
Both bathrooms are spacious with generous shelving and towel rails.
Kitchen: The kitchen is open plan to the dining/living room with plenty of fitted cupboards, shelves and worktop, electric cooker, hob with three gas rings and one electric, large fridge freezer, toaster, cafetieres.
Utility Room: Washing machine, ironing board, iron, vacuum cleaner, brooms, drying rack.
Living Rooms: Open plan living/dining room with dining table to seat 8. Built in seating and bamboo sofa, music centre, assorted CDs, toys games and books. French doors to pool terrace to the front and at the back to the garden/olive grove. Large ceiling fan.
Other: All bedrooms have French doors to balconies with stunning sea views. The master bedroom also has French doors to the upstairs sun terrace. The terraces are well equipped with tables, chairs, benches, sun beds and sunshades, and portable barbecue.
Cleaning/towels/
linen/maid service:
Linen and towels (not beach towels) are provided. Maid service provides a change of towels, a light clean of floors and pool check every 3 to 4 days and a full linen change weekly. A welcome pack is provided on arrival.

 

Notes on accommodation
Being high up Eftihia benefits from almost constant through breezes. There are large ceiling fans in all bedrooms and the living/dining room. Water is heated by solar panel. There are wooden shutters to all doors and windows. Children are very welcome at Eftihia and adore the plunge pool. However due to the height of the terraces and balconies etc we would ask that children are supervised at all times.

Outside
Eftihia sits beautifully on a mature village plot of 1/4 acre surrounded by a traditional stone wall and with double ironwork gates at the entrance. There are two sun terraces, the pool terrace on ground floor level accessed from the garden or living room and the sun terrace accessed by steps from the garden or from French doors from the master bedroom. The shady olive grove at the rear contains seven beautiful mature olive trees and is fronted by a colourful rockery containing many flowering plants including dazzling geraniums. In front of the pool terrace at the boundary wall is a row of oleander shrubs in pinks and white. There is parking for at least 2 cars.

Coast/Beach
There are numerous sandy beaches within easy driving distance. The nearest is at Almerida, less than 10 minutes by car. A further 10 minutes by car takes you to the larger beach at Kalives. Georgioupolis is approximately 30 mins by car on the national highway heading east with sandy beach running for miles.

Travel
We think car hire is essential when staying at Eftihia although people do walk to Plaka and Almerida and of course Kokkino Horio has its own mini-mart and taverna. There are also motorbikes, scooters and pedal bikes available to hire in Almerida.
Chania airport is 45 minutes drive away and Heraklion airport at the eastern end of the island, is 2 hours drive (mostly national highway/motorway).
The ferries from Athens come into Souda Bay which is about 30 minutes drive.

Further details
Watersport activities are available in Almirida and cars, bicycles, bikes and scooters are available to hire. There is also a taxi service based in Almirida. There are offices offering tours and trips, eg to walk the famous Samaria Gorge. As well as traditional tavernas serving delicious Greek food, there are restaurants serving a variety of British favourites. The shops sell everything required for a self-catering holiday. Guide books and details of local places of interest are available at Eftihia.

Booking notes
It is essential to confirm availability with the owners before booking flights. 20% deposit is required within 10 days of a booking being made with the balance payable 8 weeks before the date of arrival. Eftihia will be available from 2.30pm on the day of arrival and must be vacated by 10.00am on the day of departure. There may be some flexibility on this depending on previous/subsequent departures/arrivals.
