Kamares Houses is a restored Venetian complex in the heart of the small preserved village of Maheri in NW Crete, overlooking the plain and the sea. The landscape is breathtaking, a monument of nature and culture, a canvas where one can trace the past, present and the visions of the residents. Kamares is an A category hostel with an exemplary restoration which lasted 20 years, great tastefulness, extensive knowledge, imagination and respect for tradition and the environment. The houses were restored using all natural materials and in harmony with their surroundings. Local dressed stone, olive wood and hand wrought metalwork have been used and the colours used in decorating are all natural pigments. The work was done exclusively by us with a team of local craftsmen. The luxury of harmony and simplicity, the opportunity to sample real Cretan village life with your five senses, the chance to get in touch with nature and your inner self are the keynotes of a stay at Kamares.

| Accessed from both the cobblestone and the courtyard, the apartment is arranged on one floor. The open plan living room and dining room is very spacious and it opens out to a large verandah with a fascinating view, shaded and fully furnished with eating out facilities. There is also a kitchenette with oven, a sofa bed that accommodate a 5th person and a working fireplace. There are two bedrooms, one with double bed and one with twin iron beds, that can be attached. Both the the kitchen and the bathroom have natural lighting, ventilation and splendid views. Floorings are from old cypress and marble stone from the local mountains. Chemical materials have been excluded, Stones, tiles, marbles and lime, earth from the gorges, indigo, Byzantine tiles, cypress and olive wood, all natural materials of island, are the materials from which Kamares is built and equipped by local craftsmen, reviving old drawings and techniques. | |
Notes on accommodation
We have resisted pressure to install air-conditioning units. The 50cm thick stone walls maintain a naturally cool environment in the hottest summer months and retain valuable heat in the winter – reducing the amount of fossil fuel used throughout the year.
The property is suitable for couples and families alike.
Car rental is essential.
The village is small and quiet. For nightlife one has to drive to the coastline (5km) or Chania (23km).
Accessibility
Not suitable for guests with mobility problems, as the existing structure of the building which we have been respected has not allowed us to cater for these guests.
Outside
The independent residences are set around a large inner courtyard of great beauty, adorned with Cretan-Venetian arches, stone millstones, small pools, jasmines, hydrangeas, lemon trees and banana trees. Stone steps lead from the courtyard multilevel gardens with organically grown vegetation and orange, tangerine, apricot, fig, mulberry olive and oak trees and cacti, bordered by stone walls. In the gardens there is a nice swimming pool (10x7m,depth 0.7–1.8m, with children’s area) thoughtfully tucked away from the apartments to ensure guests' tranquillity. The residences and garden have a stunning view of the sea below, the peaks of the White Mountains behind, and around hills with castles, solitary chapels and ancient hamlets.

Nearest beaches are found at Kalyves (6km) & Almyrida (10km).
Special interest holidays
A good range of special activities can be organized upon request for small groups of families or friends; cooking, walking, visiting local craft workshops, participating in seasonal farming work.

Nearest airport is this of Chania (CHQ) at 24 km away.
The Heraklion airport (HER) is at 120 km away from the property.
