Further details
Conde Nast Traveller in 2009 said that ‘the north of Zakynthos was barely touched by mass tourism’. Not much changes here, the fishing boats put out their nets and you are often temporarily halted by flocks of sheep and herds of goats tended by old men on their donkeys. Zakynthos is the most Southern of the Ionian Islands and one of the greenest. It boasts mountains, fertile hills, translucent seas, soft sand and the smallest pebble beaches and staggeringly beautiful countryside.
The beautiful north of the island is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty and is perfect for late, spring, summer and autumn holidays. Compared to the rest of the Mediterranean it is affordable. The beaches are suitable for young children and there are many charming seaside villages with plenty of good restaurants. The island has an Italian feel from its long association with the Venetians
Zakynthos town which is 50 mins away, is a thriving, charmingly enchanting place to visit, with good shops, restaurants, churches and museums. The town has a good nightlife and an outside cinema. Spring is an especially pretty time on the island as the all the wild flowers are blooming and the colourful migratory birds are abundant. The island is fascinating to explore include the mountain villages, monasteries and the turtle beaches. The world famous turtle beach is worth a visit and you will spot the odd dolphin and seals with luck and a sharp eye.

Owner profile

About the owner
Jane and Robert’s love affair with Zakynthos began 25 years ago when they toured the island’s mountainous chalk roads on motor bikes and were blown away by the stunning scenery and crystal clear blue Ionian sea. They vowed to come back one day. In 2000 they bought a beautiful piece of land with magnificent sea views and built a wonderful house. This they designed and brought to life with the help of an English architect friend. Jane managed the project and spent nine months living with the builders to see it through. In 2006 the house was featured on ‘Grand Designs’ They would like guests to experience the stunning natural beauty of the island, and the local community of Volimes who have made their lives there with their friendliness and old fashioned Greek hospitality.

Year purchased: 2000

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We have always had a a love affair with Greece and the people, we have been on holiday to Greece since we were students and in turn brought our family. In 2000 we had a marvelous holiday on Zakynthos and this encouraged us to come back and buy the land where we built Maistrali .The area is an EU designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The combination of sea and mountains and the views of Cephalonia make Maistrali as exciting today as it ever was and we are delighted to share this with our guests.

Unique benefits of the property
The climate in summer is just perfect.Warm in the day and cool enough to sleep well at night. Total, privacy, silence, space, comfort, a tremendous feeling of well being, everything for your needs, everything works. Close by sports, restaurants ,bars and entertainment. The local people are hospitable and genuinely welcoming. There is no mass tourism at the north of Zakynthos.
