Accessibility
The house is not suitable for people with mobility problems as stone stairs are quite steep and nearest parking is 5 mins walk away from property.
Outside
Secluded courtyard covered with bougainvillea. Stunning sea views from roof terrace. Villa Alexis has outdoor table, chairs and stone seating on roof terrace. Variety of geraniums in earthenware pots and small barbecue.
Coast/Beach
25 mins walk or 5 mins drive to local unspoilt, secluded beaches. One with 2 tavernas and sunbeds/umbrellas for hire, the other, quiet and undeveloped, and reached by footpath. Many other peaceful and secluded beaches, on the island, accessible by car/moped, or boat service from Patitiri. Dolphins can sometimes be glimpsed from the more remote beaches.
Travel
The nearest airport is on Skiathos. It's 5 mins taxi drive from airport to Skiathos port, where hydrofoils and ferries go at frequent intervals to Alonissos (approx 1 hour's journey). Car/moped hire is not essential, but is recommended to explore the more remote parts of the island. There is a regular bus service between the Old village and Pattitiri (every half hour in high season).
Distances
3km to town of Patttiri or 30 mins walk along goat track. 2km to local beaches. Go on one of the waymarked walks through the woods; take a trip out to the Marine Park; go sailing around the nearby uninhabited islands; hire a small boat for the day, or just hang out at a waterside cafe. See rare birds, such as the Eleanora's falcon, dolphins, or visit the Monk Seal sanctuary.

2 local grocery shops and a minimarket are located in village. All basic produce available. There is also a bakery and Italian ice-cream parlour. The shops are all within a 5 min walk from the house. Idyllic open air tavernas and bars with sea views; arts/crafts and antique shops can all be found amongst the cobbled streets of The Old Village. Pattitiri has a bank, cashpoint, supermarkets, bakeries, tavernas and bars, a medical centre and several chemists. There is also a museum, internet cafe and a Seal Information Centre.

Owner profile
About the owner
I am a teacher, working with children in care and my husband, Peter is a senior child protection manager for Cambs. We have an adult disabled daughter and a son who is at university and we live in Cambridge.
We have been coming to Alonissos for over 10 years, and before that went to different Greek islands every year with our children. I first went to Greece with my family in 1968 and fell in love with it. Alonissos is the most beautiful of all the islands I have visited and every year I just hate to leave it at the end of Aug and return to the U.K. This year Conde Nast recommended it as one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit. Still very unspoilt and untouristy, the local people are very friendly and the beaches often deserted; it is truly a paradise island.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Having visited Greece for many years with our family for our annual holiday, we came to Alonissos first in 1999 and fell in love with it. The following year we returned to the island and bought our house. It is a joy to return every year, albeit for only a few weeks, as we are both still in full time work. The Old Village is a truly magical place, stuck in a time warp, with its cobbled streets, (all traffic free) old ruins and spectacular sea views from every angle. The village is sited on a hill on the remains of a Medieval settlement, hence the amazing views.
Alonissos is remote from the crowds of mass tourism, there are no night clubs, Macdonalds or indeed many signs of modern civilisation. It is a glorious escape and one which I shall never tire of visiting.
Unique benefits of the property
The house is ideally situated, being 5 mins walk from a bus stop, with regular buses to Pattitiri, the port town. It is within walking distance of two local beaches and tavernas and small village shops. A new bakery and Italian ice-cream parlour opened last year in the village.
There are some spectacular walks with amazing scenery throughout the island and it is teeming with wild life. The island is a marine reserve for several rare species which do not exist elsewhere: the monk seal, the Elenora falcon and the Jura goat. I was lucky enough to get close to a monk seal on a deserted beach, early one morning in Aug. Last year my husband was canoing not far from the beach of Megali Amos and found himself surrounded by friendly and inquisitive dophins eager to investigate!
