The stretch of coast between Kyparissia and Pyrgos has been untouched by tourism and has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in the Peloponnese including a 60 km stretch of beach running from below the village all the way to Pyrgos. Inland you immediately see the mountains and there are endless ancient sites, villages and walks to be discovered. The village of Agaliani is a typical rural Greek community. Predominantly its a farming community of olives, sheep and vines. There is a simple taverna in the village just below the church which looks exactly as it must have done 100 years ago. The nearest beach is at Kalo Nero (a 10 minute drive down the hill) which also has lovely tavernas, an oven-fired bakery, chemist and simple food shop. Kyparissia is the main market town (a further 10 minutes from Kalo Nero by car). Here you find shops, banks, restaurants, bars and Greek nightclubs!

Further details
The Peloponnese is a rugged land with a mountainous interior and unspoilt beaches, an island connected to the mainland by two new bridges with spectacular views across the Bay of Corinth.
The climate is purely Mediterranean along the coasts, unlike the center which has a relatively continental climate. A mythical land whose every corner brings to mind some Greek myth, the Peloponnese has more important ancient sites than any other island or country, these include Sparta, Mycenae, Corinth, Olympia, Ancient Figalia, Epidaurus, Mistras, Monemvassia and Ithomi to name but a few. Helen of Troy was from The Peloponnese. Kalamata Olives are famous the world over.

Owner profile
About the owner
My husband and I had a dream that when we were ready to have children, we would head off for a simpler, sunnier life somewhere slightly exotic. Our dream came true in the village of Agaliani. We lived for 4 years in the house with our two little daughters, immersing ourselves in the unchanged rhythm of life that Agaliani provided - goats, donkeys, old men and women who have lived through the upheavals of the last century. We watched our view change from the shimmering heat of high summer to the crystal clear light of Christmas Day. Our daughters went to the nursery in the local market town of Kyparissia and we drank our coffee in our little taverna and perfected our backgammon skills. We live in Oxford now but dream of our little greek idyll every day.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
It is very hard to find an old stone house in a greek village. The greeks do not sell their family homes as it is part of their souls and a place they return to for Easter holidays or those precious few weeks in August. But we were very lucky and managed to do so. In addition we were greeted with open arms by the village community and plied with home-made wine, cheese, jars of olives and handfulls of figs. The area is completely unspoilt by tourism or development. It is an area steeped in history, natural beauty and continuity with the past. A magical place to re-charge. The sea is a 10 minute drive down the hill and beautiful walks start straight from the front door. We hope we renovated the house with the right combination of authenticity and comfort. It is certainly a much-loved home.
Unique benefits of the property
The benefits are a combination of comfort and beauty with a tast of the 'authentic' greece. It is a rare treat to find a place so unspoilt and unchanged by time. The house is a real home with all the necessary comforts. It also offers a lot of outdoor space so you can literally discover a new place to sit every day. The locals are warm and welcoming and the very simple taverna built in the old school building, is a welcome addition where the villagers can sit and drink a coffee or share a meal. Children will be adored and cared for as the greeks have a wonderful respect and love for them. On Sundays, you will be woken by the church bells and feel a strong sense of place and history and of a community that has lived through a very dramatic century.
