The jewel of the house is its balcony, stretching the length of the house. All those who see the moon rising above the mountains of Epirus, shining over the sea behind the bell tower never forget it, no theatre can conjure such a dramatic scene. The house itself is furnished with family pieces, a mixture of Venetian and Greek, with English and Indian additions, bought during their stays there. The hub of the house is predictably the vast kitchen, where the old bread oven is still used- although now only for storage. The main 'saloni' has four rooms leading off it- sitting room, formal dining room, library and shower room. From here French windows lead out to the balcony and another door leads onto the stairs to the first floor. There are tables, chairs and couches on the balcony, so that you can live out there should you choose to do so. Each bedroom has its own individual character, be it Venetian, Greek or British. In the orange grove is a private swimming pool 12m X 6m.

Notes on accommodation

Children are welcome, however due to the low walls, and long drops the house is only recommended for children old enough to be able to be trusted to be sensible, or who are supervised outside, and on the balcony. The ground floor sitting room has a single day bed which can be used for someone who does not want to climb stairs. All ground floor rooms except the WC are wheelchair accessible, however the area outside the house is uneven and might be difficult for someone who finds walking difficult

Location Information: Benitses is an attractive fishing village and yachting marina. It is one of Corfu's oldest coastal villages- there are the remains of Roman baths there- and it is on the sheltered east coast, about 12 km south of Corfu Town. Nearly 250 years ago a Venetian family built the house on their estate, naming it after their home 'quarter' in Venice- San Stefano. Today their descendants still own the property, and have brought it into the 21st century without losing its unique character. The house has welcomed crowned heads and their retinues, celebrities, and friends over the years, and the visitors books often use the word 'paradise' to describe it. The views over sea and island are spectacular, and its central position makes exploring the many beaches and villages simple, 3 km away is the Achilleon Palace,in the attractive village of Gastouri, 5 km to Mouse Island 25 km to the golf club 35 km to Paleocastritsa Even the far north of the island is only just over one hour's drive.
