'Sunset Villas’ sit on a dramatic elevated headland, a location chosen for the fabulous views (to the fore an east to west ocean panorama with breathtaking sunsets over the sea - to the rear and side imposing views of mountains (snowcapped in early season). There is a large main terrace for barbecues, dining or watching the sun go down, preferably with favourite tipple in hand! The area around the pools with sunbeds, etc. is generous. Below the house, there is a shady area for tabletennis and a terrace with built-in sunbathing slabs. There are lots of spots to find a patch of shade with a deckchair and a book. In short a place where relaxation becomes second nature and your surroundings are a delight(when you have to go home you will have to drag yourself away). If you want diversions, the resorts of Almerida, Kalives and Georgioupoli are all an easy, scenic drive away. Chania, one of the loveliest cities in Greece, takes 40 mins. Further afield there are excursions to suit every taste

Notes on prices
Prices in Pounds Sterling for a 1 week stay. Discount 10% if you are a returning past client. Discount 10% if booking 20 or less days before your holiday start. Discounts apply only to holidays starting on a Tuesday. Payment is by credit/debit card via internet bank PayPal or by direct interbank transfer. Ask for details. Highchair, play-pen and babies cot supplied with no charge - but no cot bedding included. Prices include A/C and all linen changed once per week. Damage deposit not required.
Changeover day
Tuesday is generally changeover day in Western Crete. We can occasionally make an exception in very early or late season. Villas to be vacated by 10am on departure day. We can store luggage and sometimes offer a villa to use if your flight is much later.

Villa Ajax (2 Bedrooms (Private Pool)

High, airy living room with beamed timber ceiling of limed pine. Has a large picture window facing the ocean, comfortable seating and TV/DVD player. A bed settee converts to a double bed and there is a single daybed. Open plan kitchen with large fridge/freezer, full size electric hob and oven, washing machine and stainless steel sink/drainer. Well equipped with pots, pans, cooking utensils, electric kettle, toaster and plenty of cupboard space. Timber doors and drawers complement the white walls and timber style of decor. Master bedroom has four-poster double bed with net drapes (but mosquitoes are not a problem at this site). 2nd bedroom has twin beds which can be used together as a comfortable double. 2 en suite bathrooms with WC, basin and roomy wet floor showers, all equipped with suitable support grab rails. Water heating is by solar panel with electric override and a water storage system with gravity feed ensures a good supply of hot and cold water despite any water cuts. |

Notes on accommodation
The villas are decorated furnished and equipped to a high standard. Very suitable for toddlers, young children and elderly people too in that the houses are single storey and the main terrace, poolside and all balconies are accessed without any steps. Also the pools and one set of exterior stairs have gates so a child can move freely in and around the house without wandering into danger.
For babies we supply a high chair and travel type cot free (but not cot bedding).
Air-conditioning units can also be used as heaters and there are freestanding heaters available for the very rare occasions they may be needed.
Accessibility
Our villas are designed for inclusive access. Car drop off, accommodation, main terrace, balconies, poolside, etc. are on one level or (in 2 spots) reached by gentle ramps.
Entry to the villa is by double doors. The narrowest internal opening is 67 cm. but tell us if your wheelchair is wider and we can probably place you suitably. Thresholds are level (no steps).
Showers are spacious but have a low, smooth lip to step over. Use of toilets and showers is assisted by suitable grab rails.
Outside
Villa Athena and Villa Ajax each has a private swimming pool. Both pools measure 5m x 8m and slope from 1 to 1.6 metres in depth and have both metal ladder and underwater steps. The poolside has plenty of space for sun beds and umbrellas. The main terrace has a covered pergola, outdoor furniture for dining and a barbecue. There is a lower terrace (we call the frying zone) for the serious sun-worshipper and adjoining shaded table tennis area. Extensive landscaped gardens and hardstanding for 2 cars per villa complete a most attractive and well-liked location.
Coast/Beach
There is good, safe, local swimming from sand beaches at Almerida, Kalives and Georgioupoli (10, 20 and 25 minutes drive).
Octopus bay (15 minute drive) is great for snorkelling. A nice place to spend a day; there is a single taverna for drinks and meals. Sunbathing is on two jetties and rock terraces.
There's a small pretty cove (about 5 minute drive) with sand and pebble beach also super for snorkelling. It's an easy 20 minute walk there - all downhill - but a much tougher walk back!!
Travel
Fly preferably to Chania (about 45 minutes drive to your villa)UK charter flights mostly go on Tuesdays. You can find lower fares to Heraklion but these might be overnight journeys - upon arrival you are faced with a long transfer journey (taking from 2 to 4 hours - depending on conditions and your driving style). A car is essential staying in Sunset Villas. We can if you wish book one cheaply for you (delivery of your car to/from Chania airport is free - to/from Heraklion costs 50 euros).
Distances
Vamos. Main town, 2 excellent tavernas, bank/ATM, 20 minute drive.
Kalives. Nearest commercial town, full range of shops, etc. Banks/ATM, 20 minute drive.
Chania. Local capital, lovely old town and Venician Port, covered and street markets, nightlife, 35 minute drive.
Platanias. Beaches west of Chania, Waterworld, go-cart racing, 45 minute drive.
Aptera. Ancient city state Archeological site, 25 minute drive.
Samaria and Imbros Gorges. Fantastic mountain walks, 2 to 3 hr drive.
Further details
Sunset Villas is secluded but not remote with a large range of holiday activities within a half hour drive. Booking notes
Phone, email or mail us your requirements and we will place a temporary conditional reservation on your choosen villa and we send you a "Holiday Offer and Costing". If you want to go ahead, a 20% deposit secures your villa booking. The balance is due 8 weeks prior to your holiday and shortly before that we send you a reminder in the form of a final invoice. About the owner
Names - Terry & Paula. Why Crete? We renovated a village house here when, in the year 2000, our daughter and her Greek fiance announced their intention to settle on the island. We would use the house more after retirement; then a few years off but now a reality. Why a Villa Rental Business? We became teachers late in our lives, having been independent designers. We had rather poor pensions to look forward to an had to do something to earn a little extra! Our daughter now has 2 lovely children but she and her family never made their move to Crete, living instead in Athens. We had given up on them ever coming to Crete but suddenly, just this year, they took the plunge and did it!! So our dream of all being together in beautiful Crete has, after 11 years, finally been realised.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
When we first saw the hillside where the 3 Sunset Villas now stand, there was no hesitation. The panoramic sea view, the distant White Mountains, the wonderful sense of openness and nature and seclusion. "This is it - no doubting it" we said to one another and to the builder. We have never regretted it and our instinct has been endorsed by the very high level of satisfaction expressed by our clients. It is a rare visitor that does not love their time spent here. In 2010 a half of all our bookings were from people visiting for the 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th time. Phil and Debbie King for instance were on their 3rd visit and Phil this time brought along his two brothers and their families, renting all 3 villas. Their email sent when they got home can be seen in the "Endorsements" section.
Unique benefits of the property
GARDENS: we have put in massive effort on the landscaped gardens. They are now maturing nicely and add a lovely aspect compared with most holiday villas.
VIEWS: to the North there is an ocean panorama. The sun rises in the East over the sea and sets in the West over the waters of Souda Bay. To the South West there are the distant White Mountains and to the South our own rocky mini-mountain.
WATER: mains water has seen major improvement in quality and reliability. Still the infrastructure does not cope in the mid-summer period and we have taken steps to ensure our guests are not inconvenienced by water cuts. Each villa has a 5000 ltr emergency tank which delivers to the house by pump and if need be, by gravity also. So you will always have water - even if the electricity goes off too.
