Notes on accommodation
Heating and air-conditioning units are available if needed and included in the rental price. Water is heated by solar panels, with electrical backup.
We think that our accommodation is ideal for couples and small groups of friends. We offer discounts for single person occupation, stays of longer than a week and for both studios booked together. It is not suitable for very young children because of the open nature of the site, the depth of the pool and the changes in levels. However, for older children, who could share a self-contained studio, the pool and surrounding grounds offer a wonderful natural playground.
Accessibility
Our accommodation is probably not very suitable if you have mobility problems. Although the area around the villa is paved, there are changes in levels and the grounds themselves are either natural countryside or old terraces, with rough paths, and lots of stones.
Outside
Villa Asteria was built four years ago on a plot of land which is in part old terraces and in part wild hillside. We are gradually restoring the old terraces, but it's a big task! So, what you will see is a work in progress, but one which we hope will develop into a beautiful Mediterranean garden in future years and be a real bonus on top of all that the area has to offer already. The swimming pool (shared with Villa Asteria) is 8 x 5m and ranges from 1m-2m in depth. It is down a short flight of steps from the studios, and, just as from the studio terrace, you have a wonderful view of the sea and the Turkish mountains beyond. There are comfortable loungers and a larger table for guests' use. At the far southern edge of the pool terrace is an outdoor shower, surrounded by scented plants. Next to the shower is a large built-in outdoor barbecue. Behind the house and studios, at the edge of the wood, is the hammock area, a peaceful retreat on hot summer afternoons.
Coast/Beach
The nearest beaches are at Klima and Poseidonio, 3 kms away by road, although Klima is accessible by track, about 25 mins walk. There are many other good beaches within 15 mins drive, some with facilities, others quiet and unspoilt. We are happy to offer help and advice in choosing the best places for you.
Special interest holidays
Travel
Samos Airport is about 17kms from Villa Asteria. Charter flights go direct from Gatwick and Manchester on Thursdays in the summer season and scheduled flights several times via Athens all year round. There is no public transport in this part of the island. Although you could spend a week just enjoying what the local area has to offer, especially if you are a keen walker, we recommend car or scooter hire to appreciate fully what Samos has to offer. There is also a reliable local taxi service.
Distances
Palaeokastro, a friendly, traditional Greek village with several cafes and tavernas and a well hidden bakery and small shop is 5kms. Just beyond the village are two large supermarkets. Samos Town, with a complete range of facilities and an excellent museum is about 11kms. The resort of Pythagorio, with its historic sites, museum, and wide range of shops is about the same distance. See our website and its links for more information about Samos.
Further details
For those guests interested in walking, botany, astronomy, painting and photography, we think that this area of south east Samos has a lot to offer as a base. In spring and early summer the whole area, including our own land, is full of wild flowers, although every season has its visual interest. The Villa Asteria terraces provide a perfect platform for spectacular sunrises, moonrises and skyscapes, with a telescope available for more detailed viewing. Even if you prefer just to swim, read and relax, this beautiful, peaceful area is hard to beat; we have found that it appeals to young people just as much as to older visitors.

Owner profile
At home in Samos
About the owner
For many years we travelled all over Greece to many beautiful and interesting places. We first visited Samos some years ago and decided that this was the most beautiful place of all and that we would like to build a house here. Villa Asteria was completed in May 2008.
We chose this area of south-eastern Samos because it offers peace, seclusion, wonderful views and space for reflection and relaxation, although all modern tourist facilities are easily accessible when you feel the need to explore further afield.
We hope that you will love Villa Asteria and Samos as much as we do and, with our local knowledge of the island, we are happy to offer advice and suggestions to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
So, why do we love Samos so much? We think that the main reason is that is has so much to offer; a stunningly beautiful and cared for landscape, largely unspoiled by development. There are so many contrasts, with large pine and broadleaved forests in the mountains and a more open landscape nearer the sea, so you can enjoy a shady woodland walk in the mountains and a refreshing swim just a short while later.
Most beaches are uncrowded - even in the height of the season - so it is possible to find peace and seclusion at any time of year. Villa Asteria itself is very quietly situated and we never tire of the stunning view across the historic Mykali Strait to the Turkish mountains and the awe-inspiring night skies.
Unique benefits of the property
Without a doubt, what the majority of visitors comment on is the amazing view and the beautiful, quiet location of Villa Asteria. Of course, the peace and tranquillity does mean that resort facilities are a little further away, but if you want a conventional resort holiday then probably this isn't for you.
Most visitors enjoy going "out and about" with car or scooter hire for part of their stay, but always have a wonderful quiet retreat to return to and the most amazing night skies, a wonderful facility for those with an interest in astronomy. Relaxing in a lounger, with a glass of the excellent local Samos wine, on a warm summer's night and gazing up into a clear, starry sky, with the Milky Way spanning the heavens above you, is such a wonderful way of ending the day!
