Master Bedroom & Balcony

Villa Iremia lies, with its own private swimming pool, on the valley hillside, with views to the Bay of Mesara, and sits less than 2 miles outside Agia Galini’s heart and the sea. This offers peace and seclusion for those who seek holiday sanctuary without compromising the need for everyday necessities nor the desire for exploration and adventure. With this in mind, and due to the wonderfully dramatic and mountainous terrain of the island, motorised transport is something of a must - car hire is easily found, and readily available at the island's airports as well as in most towns (The villa has spacious parking for two cars). A balcony and sun terraces allow you to enjoy both the dramatic backdrop of the Psiloriti mountains, and the valley panorama down to the Libyan sea. Less than ten minutes' drive from the villa brings you into Agia Galini with ample shopping for essentials and luxuries, plus tourist information office and many excellent bars, restaurants and traditional tavernas.

Notes on accommodation
Villa Iremia's two double bedrooms are upstairs and are separated by the bathroom. The master bedroom has a balcony and the second bedroom a very spacious sun terrace. There are fully fitted wardrobes in both bedrooms with plenty of hanging and shelving space. Both bedrooms have air conditioning (Hot/Cold). Smoking is not allowed inside the villa. Smoking is allowed outside the villa and we do ask you to be extremely careful with discarded cigars/cigarettes. Additional sleeping facilities are by way of a large (double) sofa-bed in the living area, and a cot is available for infants. If a cot or infant's high-chair are required, please let us know when booking so that we may be sure to have these put aside for you. Barbecuing is allowed but occasionally local council bans on barbecues (BBQ's) will be enforced to protect against a high risk of fire. This, if it should happen, is outside our control.

Accessibility
Villa Iremia is one of six, individually designed villas all of which stagger the valley hillside and look south to the sea. Each villa sits on its own spacious plot and has its own private swimming pool. Each villa has been built with peacefulness, seclusion and privacy paramount to its design.
Being built, as they are, on the side of a valley, the local terrain and access is best suited to cars and those without mobility difficulties. There is parking for two cars.

Outside
Outdoor dining table with 6 chairs, barbecue, and 4 sun loungers. There is also a shaded terrace area near the villa's private pool. The pool is 'kidney' shaped with a maximum length of approximately 7.5 metres, and width of 3.5 metres. It has a uniform, 1.5 metre depth (no shallow end). The pool is private, not shared, and for the sole use of Villa Iremia guests. It is cleaned and maintained at least once, every other day.

Coast/Beach
It is less than 2 miles to the beach and the village. The good-sized beach has plenty of sun loungers and parasols and is backed by some of the best tavernas in Agia Galini. From these it is also a short walk around the rocks to the harbour and village amenities. Water sports/equipment are available to hire along the beach in the summer months.

Golf
The nearest golf course (perhaps the only one?), 'The Crete Golf Club' (Kritika Golf), is located approx. 40 miles to the north east of Agia Galini, near Hersonissos and Kastelli. This stunning 18-hole golf course is a golfer's delight and information can be easily found online with a search engine and the click of a mouse!

Skiing
The White Mountains in Crete‘s central/western region remain snow-capped into early summer and peaking at almost 2.5km / 1.5 miles with more than two dozen summits well over 2km high, beautiful plateau, and breathtaking gorges. Apparently, skiing is/was (?) available here from around December / January to March / April and a quick Google search should help to see if anything is on offer. Not being a skier I cannot vouch for what is there or is not but mountains and snow you will surely find.

Travel
The main airport is Heraklion and this is about 42 miles away via the (mostly) new main road (approx. 1.5 hours drive away). You can also fly into Chania a little farther away. Public transport to Agia Galini is limited and we would strongly recommend you hire a car on arrival at the airport/port. The nearest main port for ferries to and from Crete is approx 39 miles away in Rethymnon.

Distances
It is just over one mile to the village of Agia Galini and the beach where you will find plenty of small shops and a huge range of excellent cafes, tavernas and restaurants. For refreshments a little closer to hand, there are 2 tavernas on the 'Tymbaki Road' approximately one mile from the villa. The ancient Palace of Phaistos and the ruined city of Gortyn are within 20 minutes' drive. Other beaches; Matala, Kalamaki, Trio Petra - all quite beautiful - are within easy reach also.

Further details
There is not enough space here to document the numerous places of historical interest available on Crete... The challenge of walking the breath-taking Samarian Gorge, the wonders of the ancient Minoan palace of Phaestos, taking the sparkling spring waters in the pretty village of Spili, the beautiful lakes at Agios Nikolaos... to name but a few.

Guest comments
"...We had a blissful week in Crete, the villa was extremely comfortable and the air conditioning made for very restful nights sleep. The pool was a great success with the children and they were rarely out of it, the views were brilliant and it was so peaceful, I was completely content to relax with my books and soak up the sun. We would definitely come again with no hesitation and we will certainly recommend Don and his villas to our friends and family."

“Being in the pool gave lovely views of the surrounding mountains and felt extremely relaxing and refreshing. We loved seeing the goats, and the feeling of space in the large grounds. The loungers were perfect and the outdoor table and chairs were again, perfect for purpose and much used. The whole experience from start to finish was very positive. We would love to come back again next year.”

About the owner
Now in my seventies and having worked as a carpenter, building manager and house-builder throughout my life, I have retired and spend the majority of my time living in Crete, enjoying the friendliness and warmth (both people and climate) here and a way of life so much more in tune with relaxation and the taking of time, to that of the stressful bustle back in England. I still love England and after 70+ years I still consider it to be 'home' but I know where I'm happiest and most content. Right here in Agia Galini, Crete. I had six individually designed villas, combining modern living with traditional styling, built here whilst taking a 'less physical' role myself and oversaw the project from start to finish. They're my life's work and I'm very proud of them.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
I bought the land to build on here, just outside Agia Galini for several reasons. It was a comfortable distance from the town and harbour to reach in five or six minutes by car, and far enough away to soak up the peace and tranquillity of the stunning terrain and velvet black night skies. The villas stagger/terrace the hillside and look out at the Bay of Mesara just about a mile away. Also, I feel that the south of the island is more temperate as it edges onto the Libyan Sea. The south too, especially here, is not overly developed nor has it lost its authenticity to commercialism. Agia Galini, in my mind, is a great balance of old and new and gorgeous sandy beaches are within easy reach.

Unique benefits of the property
Staying here allows you privacy and relaxation. Your own pool glints in the sunlight (for most of the year!) and passing traffic is practically non-existent. The rhythmic humming of cicadas and the gentle clanging of goat bells are just about the only sounds to 'disturb' the silence here, but these melodies simply add to the feeling of calm meditation. A short drive takes you into Agia Galini where there are more than enough restaurants and tavernas to pick and choose from. Traditional Greek/Cretan cuisine and wonderful Mediterranean offerings or, if you're not feeling terribly adventurous, UK fayre can also be easily found.
