Villa Ionia has quickly established itself as one of the premier villas in an area of outstanding natural beauty that appeals to those seeking the real greece, not a tourist version of it. The peaceful hillside setting offers numerous walks very close at hand; some along the extensive & dramatic coastline and others through meandering footpaths and tracks in the lush hills and countryside. There are several villages nearby and Arillas has an ample choice of superb local tavernas, some along the seafront, and a few bars. The blue flag sandy beach of Arillas, with its shallow waters is only a few minutes drive away and offers a selection of water sports, boat hire and snorkeling in the clear waters Villa Ionia was designed to be spacious & comfortable whilst maximising the spectacular sea and sunset views. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning & large balconies. All rooms, the 27ft (8 metres) square open-plan lounge kitchen dining room and all terraces face the sea.

Changeover day
Any day is possible however we try to avoid leaving gaps so prefer mondays, fridays, saturday or sundays. However it is also possible to book for periods of less than one week if there is an existing gap of less than a week between other bookings.

Notes on accommodation
Our management company is owned by Simon and Maxine who were responsible for the entire construction project that became this superb villa. Having deigned and built many villas they ensured that Villa Ionia caters to just about every need. Maxine will usually meet you at the house upon your arrival to see you in and explain how everything works. She will of course have arranged a welcome hamper which we can tailor to suit. Simon and Maxine have lived in Corfu for many years, are fluent in Greek and therefore have un-paralleled local knowledge. Villa Ionia is air-conditioned throughout and your rental price includes this.
Accessibility
Villa Ionia is set on a hillside hence the spectacular views. The driveway is quite steep but with vehicular access the house itself is suitable for persons with some mobility difficulties. The pool for example has full width steps at the shallow end and one of the bedroom is on the ground floor with access to the entrance hall and lounge. It also has doors which open onto the min poolside terrace.
Outside
Villa Ionia is surrounded by private grounds extending to 1.5 acres including olive groves and cypress pines. There are several terraces and verandas on the ground floor alone including those around the pool. There are sun loungers, parasols, dining table and chairs. In the evening, sitting in the outdoor lounge overlooking the glistening lights of Arillas and often moonlit bay is sublime.
Coast/Beach
Arillas beach is just a few minutes by car. The beaches at Arrilas, St George and St Stephano are all blue flag rated, sandy beaches. The water at Arillas gently slopes away to provide very shallow waters for some distance.
Golf
The 18 hole golf course near Pelekas is about 1 hour drive away.
Special interest holidays
Photography and painting tuition can be arranged as can the services of a professional cook. For teenagers there is a rock school run by highly experienced industry professionals from the UK and and the US. Additionally we can arrange the services of qualified nannies/childminders should you require them. Please contact the owner for further information.
Travel
Easy Jet flies direct to Corfu from Gatwick, Manchester and Bristol from the beginning of April until the end of October and numerous other airlines offer direct flights from the beginning of May until the end of October. Corfu Kapadistriou airport is 45 minutes drive from Villa Ionia. A car is highly recommended. Between November and March Corfu can be reached via Athens with connecting flights offered by Olympic and Agean Air. Easy Jet and British Airways operate direct flights all year round.
Distances
There are several villages within a short drive. Two are within walking distance as are the beaches and bays of St George and St Stephanos. There are a number of vantage points along the many coastal and hill walks affording spectacular views.
Further details
Arillas is perfectly placed about three quarters of the way up the north west coast. It arguably enjoys the most spectacular sunsets on the island, enhanced by the three Diapontian islands on Ericoussa, Othoni an Mathraki. This North West corner of Corfu has thankfully seen far less tourism than the East and South of the island. Agriculture still plays an important part of the locals lives so despite the beautiful views from Villa Ionia it occupies an idyllic semi rural hillside location. The seas in this area are particularly clean contributing to Arillas's blue flag sandy beach. Corfu or Kerkyra as it is known as in Greece is one of seven principal Ionian islands and is located partly off the North West corner of mainland Greece and just one mile at the closest point to Albania. The region enjoys long hot summers and mild winters. Temperatures in May for example generally reach the late 20's and move well into the 30's throughout June, July, August in into September. During May and September the ionian Islands are awash with floral colour. Corfu, like much of Greece has its historical routes in the ancient times. In more recent centuries the island has been ruled by many nations including, France, Russia and Britain. But it was the Venetians who left their mark most prominently. In fact Corfu town itself strongly resembles Venice (without the Gondolas and waterways) and as such is simply a must see place to visit. Corfu has been the subject of many books, paintings and stunning photography and of course a choice location for many film and television productions including the Bond feature 'For Your Eyes Only' and My Family and Other Animals. With its dramatic landscapes, turquoise and azure seas, and blanket forestation of around six million olive trees interspersed with cypress pines, the Greek Island of Corfu is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the Med and indeed in Europe.

About the owner
Twenty three years ago, in a travel article I wrote for a newspaper, I described a dream I had; That one day I would own a home on the Greek Island of Corfu with views that were once just holiday memories. Now that dream has been realized. Villa Natural light, and space is important to me, as is privacy, peace and tranquility, and that has been achieved at Ionia. I've always loved the character of homes in Provence, Tuscany and The Greek Islands but I equally enjoy the modernist look. So Villa Ionia has a little bit of everything, and hopefully something for everyone. Thanks for reading. If you would like to share in my dream for a while all you have to do is book Villa Ionia!
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I was originally looking for on the east coast. But I was becoming frustrated at the excessive prices bourne out of rather amusing hype in the area about it being Kensington on Sea. Then one day, in a conversation with the developer who is a good friend of mine, I told him of my dilemma about whether to buy land on the East or West Coast. He simply asked "Do you prefer sunrises or sunsets?" You can see from the photographs which side of the island I chose. The land was purchased in 2007 and in March 2009 construction began. The house was completed in the summer of 2010.
Unique benefits of the property
It would be easy to name all the benefits: The fixtures, the fittings, the comfort, the house itself or the beautiful sea green swimming pool that you don't have to share when you stay at the villa or even the 27ft open plan square lounge kitchen dining room looking out over the pool and beyond. But for me all of these features are material pleasures. What means more to me than anything is the warm scented and unpolluted air, the peace and tranquility of the unspoilt area and of course those sunsets by the islands of Ericoussa, Othoni and Mathraki. Then there is the location; it's close enough for anything you might really need on holiday but 2000 miles away from the UK and business and that is a major benefit when you have to work hard for a living!
