Chalet in Les Contamines, Haute Savoie
About the area
The village has newly constructed artificial swimming lake with beach, and riding, tennis, climbing and restaurant facilities nearby (ATP tournament in July). There is an indoor/outdoor swimming pool opening up in St Gervais the winter of 2014.
Various golf courses -all suitable for great driving averages given the thinner air but normally with narrow fairways (Megeve, Chamonix).
Lovely for skiing, both for beginners / intermediaries, as well as for the most ambitious- the Parque Naturelle with its many randonee routes,is a heaven for serious powder hounds. The ski pass (for a small supplement), also covers neighbouring Megeve and Saint Gervais, between the three, sharing nearly 100 ski lifts and a myriad of restaurants. In 2013/2014 Contamines also boasts a new speedy lift- adding to the terrain and opportunities.
Special Interest Holidays
Wonderful mountain stuff -walking, hiking, riding, climbing, biking etc, and as we are on the the Mont Blanc Trail, the well known refuges of La Miage,Le Truc,La Balme,Tre la Tete,La Croix de la Col de Bonhomme, Roselette,La Mottet- are all within a few hours hike, and all serving good food and offering beds during the summer season.A number of these refuges are within reach of smaller children and we see a lot of parents bringing their little ones along. There are cows to watch, fondues to eat, flowers to pick etc which makes for a lovely day out.
How to get there
Geneva 70 minutes - mostly on motorway. Lyon 2 hours. Chamberey 1½ hour. Le Fayet train station 20 minutes (Paris-4h48m direct).
Just a few minutes walk from the main street/shopping/restaurants.
Main french supermarkets (Carrefour,Casino)operate in the village, and we also have a dedicated butcher and two boulangeries, in addition to the typical ski shops (8) and the rest. The hypermarkets are located down in the valley (25 minutes) and Contamines has its own outdoor market every week with local produce on offer.
There is a first for everything :-)

"The best chalet...."
We have now spent two summer holidays in Les Contamines at this chalet and I have to say it is the best chalet we have ever stayed in. The photos do not do it justice. It's a beautiful characterful chalet that is deceptively big. The bedrooms are beautiful and clean and have amazing views of the valley - I loved my morning cup of tea looking at the mountains! The open plan living room has ample space for everyone to chill out on comfy sofas and the dining area is fantastic with a massive rustic table that swallows up two big families. But definitely the best bit is the garden/patio area. The views are breathtaking and for me there was no better way to start my evening than with a gin and tonic soaking up the alps. The chalet is also in a really good position, within easy walking distance of the village which has great restaurants (the fondues are addictive) and a very special local bar! One of our favourite things to do was to take the cable car (with our dogs) and go walking, or swimming in the mountain lake. Most of my family are cyclists and they raved about the great rides but my sister and I took it easier and hired electric bikes from the village bike shop - really recommend it, masses of fun. Further afield, if you ever make it, there is Megeve, Saint Gervais Les Bains and Chamonix - all beautiful french towns well worth exploring. It's not often that we return to the same place, let alone the same chalet but for sure we will be returning again to this one...

Been here a few times now, and undoubtedly a great stay every time... A pleasant drive from Geneva airport without any fiddly roads to deal with is always a great way to start any break... A very homely feel but with enough room for 10 people, can make it as quiet & cosey or as fun as you like... and only a walk away from great food / drink so no need for the hassle of a designated driver... As for the slopes, they're phenomenal, and never had the displeasure of qeues or crowds to deal with!! would choose this spot every year without a doubt!

About the Owner
Norwegian/French couple who met in London, and feeling privileged to be part of this small alpine community. We started visiting Conta at the turn of the century, and after a long search,we finally found the chalet of our dreams, located next to the nursery slope (as well as the nursery itself),which was important given the amount of children of all ages in our families, and also very close to some of our best friends (who started coming here for many of the same reasons).
Over the years,we have learned to love not only the immediate ski terrain but also the wider national park with its endless alpine opportunities in both summer and winter- and also taken up some new sports with some reluctance. We never expected to be practising alpine climbing or mountain biking when we first arrived :-
Year property purchased: 2005
Why this location?
Les Contamines is located amidst the most beautiful mountain scenery, watched over by the imposing Mont Blanc, but yet sheltered from mass tourism. The 700 inhabitants are protective about the way of life and have yet to surrender to modern day industrial tourism. Despite that, Contamines is amongst the most welcoming ski and summer sport destinations anywhere in the alps and the quality of skiing and hiking leaves nothing to be desired. The fact that we are one hour from Geneva and yet so unspoilt and literally at the end of the road, is a huge plus.
What are the unique benefits of the property?
We've been roaming around France picking up furniture from countless brocantes. We love the views over the national park from the panoramic windows and the ability to jump into the sauna with a cold beer just to get the skiing muscles relaxed. Isabel also loves snuggling down in front of the widescreen late at night watching a french film. At that point, I am normally snoring. In terms of skiing and hiking- our big discovery was the draw of the Mont Blanc Trail in the summer, with many cosy refuges open for walkers for anything from a quick coffee,to a half board stay, as well as the Italian border only a short drive (or walk) away.Over recent years,a lot of our friends have brought their bikes (road and mountain) enjoying the varied and challenging terrain across Haute Savoie.
