La Cabane du Pommier is a recently restored barn. It retains the authenticity of the original stone building and has been extended to make a spacious detached house with a large covered terrace. The house with original features combined with modern furnishings, well-equipped kitchen and bathrooms plus a games room provides the perfect place for a comfortable and relaxing holiday. Outside are gravelled areas, grasslands with olive and fig trees and lavender borders with meadows and forest beyond. The building lies close to the tiny ancient hamlet of St Meyme de Rozens and on the edge of the Foulissard Forest. We are only 5 minutes by car to 2 small villages with shops, restaurants and P.O. and less than 10 mins from our pretty local town of Lalinde on the River Dordogne, with all main services. Nearby are a leisure lake, open-air swimming pool and interesting wildlife and historical sites. The building lies next door to the permanent home of the helpful and friendly Anglo-French owners.

Guest comments
We had a great family holiday in this stunning location. The gite is fabulous, comfortable and very well thought out. Special thanks to David for his relaxed, friendly and helpful manner. His knowledge of tourist sites and wildlife helped us plan our week. Hickman family, July 2011.
Two weeks of sunshine, peace and tranquility in the most comfortable holiday accommodation we have ever experienced. Most days were spent relaxing on the terrace with a good book plus occasional forays into the meadow to photograph butterflies. Thank you David and Audrey for providing such a perfect holiday retreat. We will undoubtedly be back. John and Linda Reinecke, Sept 2011.
We had a wonderful week in this spacious and well-equipped barn. It's conveniently located to many of the Dordogne's best attractions. The real selling point is the peace and tranquility. Nothing was too much trouble for our host and David's help was really appreciated. Thanks for a great week! Ben and Dorothy Driver, Oct 2011.

Owner profile

David, Joseph and Audrey, May 2009

About the owner
David Simpson is English originally from Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) and Audrey Royo is French from Agen (Lot et Garonne). We have worked on nature reserves in the UK for over twenty years, mainly on the sand dune coast of Cumbria and Lancashire/Merseyside. After a period working in Mauritius and Seychelles we decided to settle in Dordogne around 2002, not far from Audrey's family. More recently we have been working around France for camping holiday companies such as Eurocamp and Canvas Holidays, both as couriers and maintenance engineers. Today we live permanently next door to our holiday rental cottage 'La Cabane du Pommier'. David leads occasional wildlife holidays, writes articles and manages the gite, whilst Audrey works locally. Their young son Joseph was born in April 2008.

Year purchased: 2003

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We chose our location near Lalinde for a number of reasons. We wanted a beautiful natural location with lots of wildlife and local history interest. However it needed to be close to a town with all services, good supermarket etc, an airport for flights to the UK, close to the main Dordogne tourist sites plus not too far from Audrey's parents! We feel that we have found a good balance between a feeling of remoteness and tranquility at the property and yet we are less than 10 minutes from town. When we first visited the house it was a beautiful crisp sunny day in mid-winter 2002. We parked in the hamlet of St Meyme and walked with the estate agent along the old 'chemin rural' and up through the limestone meadow to the terrace. The place was perfect for us and we purchased it soon after!

Unique benefits of the property
We are on a hillside facing SE, with bright sunny mornings on the terrace but pleasantly cool afternoons with the protection of the building and forest behind. We can walk freely out of our 10 acre property through forest and meadows around the open hilltop or down to the marsh. There is practically no fencing hereabouts. Footpaths lead in all directions and can take you to local villages or on walking circuits. The property lies at the end of a lane so there is no passing traffic. We have a butterfly garden, orchard, ponds, meadows and forest with a great variety of wildlife. Deer visit the meadow and there is always something to watch from the terrace! We can easily reach places of interest, including a great variety of wildlife sites, and there are numerous good restaurants locally.
