Outside
There is a private sun terrace with beautiful views of the wooded foothills.
Skiing and winter golf are prime activities for this beatiful Pyrenean resort.

Golf
There is a spectacular golf course available for people who like to mix their sports. The 18-hole golf course looks on to Le Pic du Midi and is only 3km from my home. Many bright and sunny days in winter allow for games to be played.

Skiing
There are several ski resorts within easy driving distance. The nearest and the largest in the Pyrenees is La Mongie which is approx. 20km away and can be reached by car or by a bus service which runs to the resort and back. This resort is cheaper than the Alps and undiscovered by British tour operators. It is virtually undiscovered outside south west France, so take advantage of a chance to be a lone Brit in a beautiful ski resort where ski passes are still at a reasonable price!
La Mongie is situated in the Domaine du Tourmalet and has 69 pistes, 23 green, 19 blue, 21 red and 6 black. 43 ski lifts and a snow park. Off piste and cross country skiing are available with guides if required. There are many local hire shops for all your skiing needs - and I have an arrangement with one of these shops to give a 20% discount to all my guests.

Bagnères can be enjoyed all the year round. In the spring, summer and autumn months you can walk, cycle or mountain bike through stunning countryside. The weather is gloriously warm and sunny and you can enjoy the atmosphere and people watch in many outside cafes in the town squares. Or spend a morning at one of the many local and regional food markets. Often there are warm sunny days in the winter months when there can be the added enjoyment of downhill skiing, cross country skiing and raquetting (snow shoe walking) There are many sports and leisure activities for the amateur through to the real enthusiast. La Mongie, the largest ski station in the Pyrenees, is only 25 kms/15.5 miles away and Bagneres offers a regular bus service to this little known but excellent ski resort. Owner profile

About the owner
I have been passionate about France one way or another for more that 45 years and I speak fluent French. It all started with a pen friend, then many trips to France followed, sometimes I hitch hiked around France with one of my brothers and then later went alone. I later became a keen skier and found this part of France captivating both in the Winter and Summer. If you need any assistance in translation, directions, hiring any equipment, shopping or just in getting around, I would be happy to help. I have good local knowledge having now lived here since 2003. As well as being a good cook, I offer a varied menu and like to eat traditional local French food including Basque and Bigourdan.

Year purchased: 2003

Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
My house is an elegant fin de siecle town house in a pleasant square in the old part of Bagneres de Bigorre and is a conservation area. It has the best view around of a 12th century Jacobean tower and the history of the the area is rich: the Mother of France's favourite king, Henry IVth, gives her name to the square, Jeanne d'Albret and she was was a frequent visitor to the thermal baths here. My house took me 2 years to renovate using local artisans - an experience in its own right! Just behind the house start the foothills of the Pyrenees and so whilst one is in town, with all its amenities and facilities, one is only minutes away from a variety of superb mountain walks of varying duration and challenge and so if you are planning a walking holiday, a car is not an essential.

Unique benefits of the property
During your stay at the house in Place Jeanne d'Albret, you will be able to choose whether you eat in one of the town's many restaurants which range from posh and good value eating experience to bistros and pizza bars. The house is only minutes from them all or you can choose to eat in and menus and wine will be discussed with you. Aquensis is the place to go for a deeply relaxing experience whether after a walk or a ski and it is only 2 minutes from the house - it is a veritable aquatic fairy land with the natural spa waters around 30 degrees and so don't forget to bring your swimming gear! You can also choose to have an inhouse aromatherapy massage or reflexology treatment from your hostess (if you are not eating in) who is a qualified therapist. There are many other distractions.
