Owner profile
About the owner
I was so lucky to find this superb property in the Charente valley seven years ago and though I don't spend all my time in France, I simply love being here - there is so much to do including stone carving in a 12th century chapel. I have made many improvements to the house and garden including putting in a swimming pool, stripping the elm staircase, erecting stone arches and trellises now with vines growing over them and making a small cottage from one of the stone outbuildings. The other houses my 1968 Morris 1000 and my studio - I am a sculptor and amateur musician. I am learning to play bridge - in French - go riding through the woods and vineyards, attend two drawing classes, clay modelling, a choir and am a member of the Inner Wheel which is very good for my French and making friends.
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I looked at a map of France - decided I wanted to live south of the Loire, not in the south (too far from UK, too hot; not in the centre - too hot in summer, too cold in winter and inaccessible; and not in Burgundy which I love but the weather is not so good. So I picked the Atlantic coast which has wonderful weather - as much sun as Provence, delicious sea food markets and is a very interesting area culturally : so many Romanesque churches, good music and lovely countryside covered with vineyards and sunflowers. I wanted to be in a village and am privileged to be on the corner of a very special village near the Charente river in marvellous walking and cycling country - not too hilly but undulating. The property has a very large garden, mainly lawn and lime trees with large parking.
