Notes on accommodation
The house is well equipped for children: cot, highchair, stair gate. It is a happy family house, to which many people return. Plenty of buckets, spades etc. 2009 - we now have wifi broadband with free landline calls to most countries.
Accessibility
Not suitable for wheel chairs or people who have trouble going up stairs.
Outside
Two communicating, walled gardens, safe for children. An outbuilding contains barbeque, a lot of bikes of all ages and for all sizes. Plenty of garden furniture. The garden is quiet and peaceful, considering it is in the centre of a village which is very active during the summer.
Coast/Beach
There are several beaches in the area: Plage St Michel is a four minute walk away and is where we have our beach hut. It is an attractive smallish beach with lots of rock pools.
Plage Valentin is easily walkable (10 minutes) and is larger with surf. Wind surfing and sailing schools are there. The beach at La Baule is among the longest in Europe: vast amounts of money are spent on keeping it in best condition and the huge sweep of the bay is spectacular. About 4 miles (either cycle or drive).
Golf
La Bretesche at Missillac and La Baule golf courses are renowned and about half an hour's drive away. A 9 hole course at Le Croisic (10 minutes) has lovely views over the Atlantic.
Travel
Nearest airport is Nantes - an hour's drive. St. Malo ferry port is about two and a half hours' drive (Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth) 10% Brittany Ferries voucher for any BF crossing; Cherbourg, Caen about 4 hours and about 7 from Calais. Le Croisic (2km away) is the terminus for the high speed train (TGV) from Paris and Lille Europe. It is possible to stay in Batz without a car as all food is available and so many lovely walks and cycle rides.
Distances
Batz-sur-Mer is on a peninsula with the sea on one side and the salt marshes on the other. Le Croisic, a fishing port, is at the end of the peninsula and is attractive and walkable/cyclable. Le Pouliguen is on the river that separates it from La Baule. La Baule is sophisticated and has its own charm lying among pine trees. Guérande is a medieval walled city, a little inland, and has to be seen. The Brière is a huge freshwater marshland, a conservation area and beautiful.
Further details
Local shops sell all that is required. Large supermarkets: LeClerc, Intermarché, Auchan etc all in the area. Restaurants abound, many specialising in sea food.
The salt marshes separate Batz from Guérande. They are a haven of bird life and the colours, ever changing, are a magnet for water colourists. The salt is harvested using methods unchanged for over a thousand years. Salt is sold in all the surrounding villages and at the side of the roads. A museum in Batz gives the history and fascinating facts about the marshes and the area.

Owner profile
About the owner
Despite my name (Paddy), I was born in France of a French father and English mother. I was educated in England and have spent most of my life in England, having married an Englishman. I do speak fluent French.
We bought our house in Batz-sur-Mer shortly after the death of my father in 1985. He had retired to La Baule and we had come to love the area. We have done a lot to the house since then and it has been a very happy holiday home for us, our children and then our grandchildren. It is fully equipped as a home and I feel this has helped the many tenants we have had over the years to enjoy it. I take a personal interest in the letting and many tenants have become friends - even if we have not met!
Year purchased: 1980's
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We knew the area well, my father having lived in La Baule. We preferred Batz because it is smaller and less crowded; also because for the price of a one room flat in La Baule we got this lovely house and garden.
Unique benefits of the property
We come here a lot ourselves, more so now that we are retired. We love it when it is busy in the summer, with the beach just 4 minutes' walk away. Also in the winter when it is quiet and the coast regains its natural beauty. We have wonderful walks along the coast and in the salt marshes. This November (2010) we saw avocets and redshanks in abundance in the salt marshes.
Our house is so convenient for food shopping - most things just outside the door: small supermarket, fish shop, boulangerie.
