Further details
The department of Ariège nestles in the Pyrenees, next to Andorra, its highest peaks visible from Toulouse. It is one of the least populated, most unspoiled regions of France, whose inhabitants have held fast to their traditions. Local towns retain features of medieval architecture and numerous species of butterflies, orchids and raptors thrive here thanks to the continuation of ancient farming practices.
The Ariège stands across a corridor between Africa, Spain and Europe. The numerous castles, fortified towns, and churches bear witness to the rich history of the area.
The Ariège has always served as a refuge:
For prehistoric man who sheltered in the many caves, for the catholic heretics who defied the Church, and for resistance fighters, war-time refugees and downed WWII pilots who eluded the Nazis to escape over the mountains into Spain. And now for refugees from the stresses of modern life.
The area is one of the cradles of the humanity and Niaux's cave invites you in a moving journey into the past to find the life, the tracks and the paintings of our ancestors of 13000 years ago. Niaux is one of the rare decorated caves still opened to the public. There is a wide range of other sites for those interested in prehistory.
The local caves also conceal the underground river of Labouiche which can be toured by boat, offering a cool alternative to the heat of the summer.

Good luck with the venture, we are sure it will be a great success once the word is out.
All the best to you both
