The house is well equipped for babies and toddlers with cot, highchair, night lights, potty, Tomy baby listeners, bed rail and more. Le Grand Theuillac is a peaceful, relaxing and civilised place particularly suited to families with small children and groups of older adults.
Accessibility
Not suitable for wheelchairs but excellent for anyone with slight mobility problems. Apart from single steps at the entrance doors/patios and 2 steps down from the Dining Room to Lounge, the property is on one level.
Outside
A large private garden at the rear of the villa has sun loungers and a covered terrace with table and chairs and built-in BBQ; ideal for relaxing and dining outdoors. Separate sun loungers and parasols provided by the 12 x 6m solar heated swimming pool a short way from the villa (max 50m) shared occasionally (usually July and August).
Coast/Beach
Only 10-15 mins away, Meschers & St Georges have the finest local beaches. There are several sheltered sandy coves, never over-crowded, each with cafe or restaurant and all are backed with trees making them ideal for children. Lots more fantastic beaches within reach (including some famous surfing beaches) many backed by dunes and forests.
Golf
There are several golf courses in the area including Royan, Saintes, Cognac and La Rochelle. These courses combine varied technical aspects with something to please players of all levels. Delightful surroundings, views over the sea, forested sections, unspoilt countryside and outstanding facilities. The nearest two are at St Palais, near Royan (15 miles), carved out of the heart of the Courbre forest with narrow sloping fairways, lined with tall pines and mimosa. Superb views over the trees to the Atlantic. Slightly further (25 miles), south of Boyardville, 8kms from St Pierre d'Oleron, a flat(ish) links-type course on the shores of the Atlantic. It includes a large number of water hazards with vegetation typical of sand dunes. 9 holes, 2908m, par 36. In addition to these 3, there are 6 more; 3 x 9-hole courses at Rochefort and on the Ile de Ré and Ile d'Oléron and as many 6-hole courses at La Jarne, Montendre and St Porchaire.
Travel
By car, we are 4½ hours drive from the ferry port at St Malo and just over an hour from airports at Bordeaux and La Rochelle. There are train links but car hire is recommended to fully explore all the region has to offer.
Distances
Cozes 1½m, Talmont 4m, Meschers 6m, Saint Georges de Didonne 8m, Royan 12m, Saintes 16m, La Palmyre Zoo 20m and a little further away, Cognac 30m, Ile d'Oléron, Rochefort, Iles de Re and Aix, St Jean d'Angely, Angouleme and more.
Further details
Cozes has a full range of good independent shops, an ancient covered market and a good Carrefour supermarket with petrol, car wash and cash machine. Nearby you will also find a monument to the original master of Le Grand Theuillac, a republican mariner and one-time prisoner of England during one of our many scuffles with France! Happily, things have been smoothed over in the last 215 years!
There are many excellent restaurants within easy reach, some for which we have translated menus, and a very good French takeaway in Cozes where you can pop in and select what you fancy from the day's choices.
Voted one of the most beautiful villages in France, our nearest seaside village is Talmont, a bastide built in 1284 by Edward 1st of England and its appearance has hardly changed since then. Inside the walls, 17th and 18th century houses surround the harbour and hollyhocks and roses line its many pretty lanes. Talmont has two excellent restaurants, artisan shops selling all sorts, a variety of small cafes, crepe sellers, ice-cream shops and an old-fashioned carousel for small children.
There is a local market somewhere every day of the week and the large indoor food market at Royan is open every morning except Monday.

(Kellys) (4) We had such a lovely holiday, definitely the best family holiday to date and thank you once again for making it that bit more special (Ankers). (5) The villa itself is absolutely stunning, so much space and light and so clean we felt like we were the first guests ever to stay there (Knights). (6) A holiday of too many superlatives to list - the perfect tonic to our busy lives in the UK. We absolutely do not want to leave but we are refreshed and relaxed and will be back asap.
