A unique villa set on the edge of the peaceful village of St Front sur Nizonne, between the beautiful Renaissance town of Brantome and the fortified town of Nontron. The huge salon/great room is the hub of the property, with the kitchen nestling privately in one corner and the bedroom wings at each end. Why not start the day with breakfast on the covered terrace, catching the morning sun, and then walking through the salon for a quick dip in the pool and then something in a glass while the BBQ is sizzling? Perhaps relaxing in the sun in the afternoon on the many loungers, followed by a meal from a kitchen which is a cook's delight and then a sun downer by the illuminated pool and decking? In heat of the day, the climate control will keep you cool. Sky TV and plenty of seating to relax in are good news in the salon. This villa really has everything. Wi fi internet connection and telephones in every room.

Utility Room: This is our store room. Please ask for anything you need and cannot find!
Living Rooms: The lounge and dining room are combined in one giant salon of approx. 100 sq m. There is a large TV with dvd player, video player, satellite TV and a separate CD player. There is comfortable seating for 12. The dining table also seats 12+. French windows.
Other: In addition to the main entrance hall with a separate WC and coat cupboard, there is a second bedroom hall with a table and seating that can be used for children's meals etc. Every bedroom has lots of cupboards. The covered terrace is enclosed on 3 sides.

linen/maid service:
Good quality (eg Dorma) bed linens are provided and changed weekly at the discretion of guests. Bath and hand towels (not pool) are provided.
The property should be left clean etc or there is an optional end of holiday cleaning service for €80.

Notes on accommodation
The villa is designed to be our really comfortable dream home and we are pleased to give you the opportunity to enjoy it!
With the salon, terraces and decking all connecting together there are about 400 sq m of easy enjoyment space. Even the salon lighting has mood setting dimmers controlling the 7, 10 light, flower chandeliers!
The West Wing has 4 bedrooms, the King, Queen and two twins has it's own private entrance hall off the salon. The East Wing has the two double bedrooms and leads off from the main entrance hall.
This means that there are two distinct family privacy zones.
All the French windows in the double bedrooms open onto the "Church side" decking...a short cut to an al fresco breakfast perhaps?

Accessibility
Whilst the property has not been specially adapted for users with mobility problems, the wide doorways and spacious rooms of this single floor property make it suitable for many users.

Outside
The villa is in the middle of 8000 sq m gardens, with decking on two sides affording views toward the village (Church side) and over the fields towards the forest on the other (pool side). The substantial gas fired BBQ is situated in a summer kitchen next to the pool side decking with the 8 x 4 m (approx) pool set into the decking. The pool has automatic ph control and is therefore very slightly salty. It is cleaned Mon., Wed., and Fri....the plants are watered at the same time by us to ensure your enjoyment. This also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions about the area!
There are plenty of loungers and chairs, both church side and pool side. Also dining tables etc.
Both the covered terrace and the poolside pergola areas are tiled and have outside lights... there are lights round the pool as well!
There is ample private parking.

Coast/Beach
The lake (Etang) at St Estephe is excellent with a beach and bars etc, this is just North of Nontron. A must for families with children. The other two leisure lakes we would suggest are The Grand Lac (between St Mathieu and Maeval) and St Mathieu (follow the signs approaching St Mathieu).

Golf
We recommend the first class, 18 hole, golf course at Chancelade, about 18km. away, near Perigueux.

There is a 9 hole golf course at Pilac and there are others in the region.

Special interest holidays
There are tennis courts in Nontron and St Pardoux.

For go-carting we suggest the excellent track at Teyac, near Javerlac which is a town near to Nontron. Fast machines, loved by teenagers.

When you are here, we particularly recommend canoeing: starting, for example, at Brantome and going downstream to Bordeilles. You will probably get wet, but is a wonderful family experience. They will drive you back!

There are, of course, fishing, horse riding and many other activities in the area.

Also for the youngsters, what about the jungle gym at Thenon.

By car ferry:
Caen 5.5hrs, 527km.
St Malo 6 hrs, 518km.
Cherbourg 7 hrs, 645km.
Calais 8 hrs, 760km.
If you travel Brittany Ferries, as our guests you can get a discount!
By air:
Angouleme is nearest, about 1 hours drive but is only served by Ryanair.
Limoges and Bergerac are about 1.5 hours drive, Ryanair, Flybe from Stansted, Luton, Exeter, Gatwick or Southampton.
Car essential.

Distances
Nontron is about 5km North of St Front sur Nizonne. This old town, fortified by massive ramparts set high on a rock, has a picturesque 18th century Chateau. It was also the birthplace of the archer who killed King Richard a few miles further North at Chalus! It has a lively doll and toy museum for the children which even has the French equivalent of the satirical Spitting Image puppets.

Excellent supermarkets, we suggest Super U.

The tourist office is very helpful.

Further details
We will leave a good selection of leaflets on local attractions etc for you to look at on your arrival. Not only is the tourist office in Nontron good but so is the one in Brantome.

Brantome itself, a few km South of the villa a lovely medieval town with it's atmospheric Abbey founded by Charlemagne (782-814) and wonderful waterside walks is a must. It really is "The Venice of Perigord". Lots of good places to eat as well.

Even if you do not brave the canoe journey all the way to Bordeilles (there are several stopping points on the way), the pretty viiage is well worth a visit with two Chateaux of different periods, a 13/14th century medieval fortress and a 16th century Renaissance palace.

It is from here that the Barons of old transported themselves to the Holy Land at night to fight dragons..after inhaling certain substances!

Also not far away is the town of Villars where a massive cave sytem was discovered in 1953. Why not take the tour and marvel at the huge stalactites and see the 17,000 year old prehistoric cave paintings?

The Chateau de Puyguilhem (in Puyguilhem!) is facinating structure way out in the woods. It is a Renaissance masterpiece that was lovingly restored after WW2.

Or, going a bit further but well worth the drive, in Aubeterre sur Dronne, just over the Charente border, you will enjoy the charming narrow streets which wind past white stone houses and ancient buildings. The underground Church of St John is the most outstanding and impresive monument.

After all that we think a nice glass of wine by the pool is called for: we counted the glasses the other day and stopped when we reached 100: no shortage!

We will contact you promptly when you make an enquiry and will email you the booking form for completion for you to confirm the booking. 25% of the rental will be required as confirmation with the balance payable 8 weeks before the holiday. There are special arrangements for very early bookings. Please ask about long period/winter lets.
A security/breakage deposit of £300 must be included in the final payment and will be refunded (net) within 10 days of departure.

About the owner
My wife and I are now both retired, or so we are told! I was a Company Director/designer and buyer, my wife was a senior personel officer with a leading plc. Having sold our home in Cornwall, we spend our time between our personally designed homes in France and Spain, frequently wintering in Florida. my wife and I will welcome you to La Croix and will keep in contact during your stay to ensure your comfort. How we got here:I flew into Limoges one Sunday to look at a conversion prospect, quite unsuitable, drove into Brantome and fell in love! The same day, I looked in estate agents windows' and saw a picture of the green field site that is now La Croix. I realised at once that it had potential, so on the Monday I bought it! The rest is history.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We fell in love with the medieval town of Brantome (the Venice of Perigord) and the natural beauty of the surounding area. La Croix is situated on a peaceful site on the edge of the village of St Front sur Nizonne and enjoys views over the village and the surrounding countryside but is still within easy reach of Brantome, Nontron and many other towns and villages. It was designed as a wow factor villa with great attention to detail and was completed in 2001. You can walk through the 100sq m Salon from the Church side decking which catches the first rays of sun in the morning to the pool side decking for a quick dip in the private pool before settling down for a glass of something while the BBQ sizzles close by! If the sun gets too hot, the underfloor cooling will keep you cool.
