Our villa, which has a beautiful private pool, overlooks a picturesque wooded valley in the vineyard area some 700ft above the ancient city of Cahors with its magnificent 12th Century Cathedral. Although the villa is in a rural setting it is only 10 minutes to the first class restaurants in the city. Nearby is the 13th Century Chateau Mercues perched high on a cliff overlooking the city offering a superb menu but Le Vinois at Cajarc is even better. A 'must see' is the 14th Century Pont Valentre which straddles the stunning, wide and meandering River Lot. The river encloses Cahors on three sides. Pleasure boats ply the river and a litle train takes visitors to major places of interest - Cahors is full of ancient buildings. There are a number of wonderful viewing points where every rooftop can be seen as well as the meander of the river. On Wed. and Sat. mornings there is a market full of colourful stalls selling fruit and veg. spices, jewellery, cheeses, wine, flowers and local crafts.

Notes on accommodation
New for 2007 are the air-conditioned bedrooms which are very necessary in high summer. The bedroom windows are fitted with mosquito netting. During the letting period the owners of the villa will not be at the property. Pets considered.
Outside
The villa is set in over 1 acre and has it's own private fenced pool set in a large terrace. Across the rear of the villa, as well as the Master Bedroom windows, there are 3 separate sets of patio doors which offer beautiful views over the terrace and pool on to the magnificent valley beyond. There is a lovely large wrought iron table with 8 chairs together with 3 loungers, 3 steamers and two large parasols. Our nearest vineyard is 300 yards away and is owned by the Alazard family who have been producing wine in Flottes for 4 generations. Walk 300 yards down the road, ring the bell and buy a bottle or four from the vineyard owner - the conifers in our front garden are even featured on the label! The wine is called Domaine du Soulleilan which, in the local patois, means 'land of the rising sun' - cheers! The wine is a heavy red and goes well with the region's pate de foie gras, truffles, walnuts and walnut liqueur, prunes, melons and goat's cheese [cabecous].
Coast/Beach
A little know fact about the city of Cahors is that it is 125 miles from the Atlantic, 125 miles from the Mediterranean and 125 miles from the Pyrenees. We are two hours drive from the medieval walled city of Carcasonne and 3 hours from Narbonne Plage on the Mediterranean.
Travel
The villa is a day's drive from the Channel Ports and Tunnel - We use the Channel tunnel and stop overnight in a different town as part of the holiday. Airports serving this area include Toulouse [our nearest - just over 1 hours drive virtually all on motorway], Rodez, Bergerac, Carcassonne and Limoges. Main airlines include BA, Easyjet, Ryanair, FlyBE and BMIBaby - car hire available. A train service runs from Toulouse and Limoges to Cahors where car hire is also available and essential.
Distances
Nearby, is the perched villages of St.Cirq Lapopie [just under an hour away by car] and Rocamadour [an hour and a quarter]. The Lot region is famous for wonderful caves such as the Gouffre de Padirac and Grotte de Pech Merle. There are two lakes nearby with imported sandy beaches [25 mins and 40 mins]. There you can swim [roped off area for toddlers], canoe, take out pedalos - restaurants at both.
Many pretty villages like Castlenau Montratier [30 minutes]. Guide books here for many others.
Further details
The villa is only 8 minutes to our nearest supermarkets - both have marvellous fish counters. It is 10 minutes to Cahors where you will find, as well as the wonderful fountains on the tree-lined Boulevard Gambetta, shops and restaurants of every description. Turn left at our villa and make the descent to Douelle along winding lanes with only oak, pine trees and conifers for company. 8 minutes later you will have arrived on the banks of the River Lot where, apart from stunning views [paragliders can often be seen], you can enjoy a lunch-time or evening 'wood oven' cooked pizza overlooking the river. Two other restaurants in Douelle - a marvellous seafood restaurant La Marine and Le Vieux Douelle with varied menu - Highly recommended. Our favourite though is Le Marche in the square near Cahors Cathedral and, of course, Chateau Mercues !
