Porte Rouge is a spacious 14th Century stone built house situated high up, with superb views out over the roofs of the village below to the river and the hilly countryside beyond. Combret is a small, historic and picturesque village in the unspoilt countryside of South Aveyron, the 'Kitchen of France', situated east of Albi, one hour from the exceptional Millau Viaduct. The village, which dates back to the 11th Century, is perched on a spur in a bend of the river Rance - a tributary of the river Tarn. Whilst you can get to the house with your car, there is no passing traffic apart from the postman and our neighbours.

Changeover day
Saturday arrival. Porte Rouge is available to guests from 4.00pm onwards and departure is before 10.00am. Out of season we are prepared to be flexible on dates.

Notes on accommodation
1 of the en-suite bedrooms is on the ground floor.
There is a Victorian cot, a travelling cot and 2 put 'u' up beds available.
Accessibility
Combret is a old hill village, resultantly the roads are narrow and steep. This could cause difficulty to those who have impaired mobility. However it is possible for cars to reach the house. We would add that possession of a car is essential due to the location of the village.
Outside
There is a large, secluded walled courtyard with a stone barbecue and table and chairs. It is possible to be in the sun or if too hot, in the shade most of the day. There is outside lighting for those balmy evenings under the stars. Nestling under the medieval stone walls is a small swimming pool. The pool is half out of the ground and is safe for young children as the steps up and into it are easily removed. The open countryside is a few yards outside the courtyard through the big red gates.
Coast/Beach
Mediterranean at Sete (Beautiful fishing town, fine restaurants, long sandy beach)- 2 hours drive,
Lakes with sandy beaches, pedalos etc.,) - 40 minutes drive,
River Tarn (canoeing, rafting, rock climbing)- 30/70 minutes drive. Driving the full length of the Gorge du Tarn takes a full day (breathtaking views).
Golf
Albi: 50 minutes drive
Golf d'Albi Lasbordes, a championship course with trees, 18 holes, 6155m. Par 72. 3 minutes drive from town centre overlooking the River Tarn and offering beautiful views of the cathedral. Bar and Restaurant.
Rodez: 1 hours drive
Golf du Grand Rodez. 18 hole, par 70, 5548m, driving range, pro shop, putting green, covered tennis and badmington courts, restaurant, accommodation.

Further details
There is an Auberge (good food) but no shops in the village but it is only a 10 minute drive to the local ones and 25 minutes to a big supermarket. A butcher, baker and grocer visit the village. There is river swimming (with deep still ponds) in the village and there are several restaurants in nearby villages. There is horse-riding, go-karting, swimming pools, tennis and gliding within 15 minutes and white water rafting and canoeing about 50 minutes in the beautiful Tarn Gorge. There are some lovely lakes with sandy beaches with pedalos, sailing and amusements, about 40 minutes. The area is noted for some of the best walking country in France and of interest to naturalists and ornithologists.
