Guest comments
It's rare to find poly-bag twiddlers and both French and English dictionaries in one Gite - a mark of how well equipped this house is. Spacious rooms - both private and public - make this place stand out, even for seasoned Gite users! Sarah and Peter, Bournville, July 2010

This was our first visit to france. Weather was wonderful + 30 degrees and places where we visited was interested and impressive. Many thanks for jo and Jonathan, welcoming was so warm. This Gite was lovely place. Bread and jam delicious. One week in this place is too short time. Sari and Jukka, Finland, June 2010 (apologies for their English - a lot better than our Finnish!).

Difficult to improve on perfection. We have had a great week. Difficult to find nicer hosts. Jo and Jonathan are such a pleasure to know - their evening meal is a must. Paul and Sarah, Hampshire, April 2010

Owner profile

The proud couple at our son's wedding in Dublin

About the owner
Hi - we are Jo and Jonathan and we bought our small piece of beautiful Normandy in 2001. At first it was just a holiday home and we spent three years dashing back and forth cutting the grass and getting to know the locals. Eventually it got harder and harder to leave this tranquil place, so we did our sums, sold the house, left our jobs and moved over in October 2004. Since then we have renovated three houses and are close to starting construction on a self-build, low energy timber house on our 1 acre field. Very exciting. The move to La Belle France was the best thing we have done, second only to getting married all those years ago of course! The locals have accepted us as members of the community, although we still need to improve our French, and the life here is just wonderful!

Year purchased: 2001

Why the owner chose a home in this location
France is a great country - but it is huge, so how do you decide which part to settle in. As so often happens, factors outside your control mould your decision. We met a great couple at French evening classes, stayed with them in their house in Normandy - our first visit to this area - and rented a Gite closer to the Channel ports before going home. The Gite owners became close friends and introduced us to their friends - we were hooked. We loved the green countryside, the seasons (snuggling up in front of a log fire can't be beaten!) and the friendly locals. It hasn't been all plain sailing, but the good bits far outweigh any hassle with French bureaucracy! Le Deshayes is a small hamlet of 8 dwellings, so we are part of a small community whilst feeling like we are in the countryside.

Unique benefits of the property
Le Deshayes is ideally situated and equipped for a restful and relaxing holiday. Unwind from the pressures of life in the comfort of a well appointed Gite where the loudest noises are the bird song in the morning and the cows mooing in the distance! Night time is particularly magical as the lack of light pollution reveals so many stars you are able to identify the planets and constellations! The shops in our nearest village, Cerisy la Salle, can provide all the necessities of life or you can go a little further to the big supermarkets in Coutances or St Lo for a wider range of good quality food and wine. The nearest beaches are safe, sandy and stretch for miles and we are located between the wonder of Mont St Michel and the amazing history of the D-Day beaches. You won't be disappointed.
