Gite des Cathares consists of 3 spacious, self contained apartments. All are tastefully furnished, light and airy, contain artwork and we also provide a computer and free internet. The pretty terrace is south facing and overlooks the river Salz and is a lovely place to relax in the sun. The gites are located in the traditional village of Couiza, Aude and are walking distance of shops, restaurants and cafes. Couiza is a pretty village in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon and is ideal for an active or family holiday. Couiza itself has 2 restaurants, 2 patisseries, a local shop, cafe and bar and is a short walk from markets, river swimming and beautiful landscapes. 4km away is Rennes-le-Chateau. Several beautiful lakes are a short drive away - Arques, Montbel and Dhuilac and several castles dot the landscape. Other attractions near Couiza include walks, horse and bike rides, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and winter sports are just over an hour away.

Notes on accommodation
Long term rentals available all year from €490 per month plus electricity (all other bills and internet are included). 25% discount for bookings of 2 weeks or more and 40% for bookings of 2 months or more.
We accept bookings from any day to any day and proportional rates are available. We accept payment in Euros and British pounds by bank transfer, cheque or PayPal (a secure online payment system).
A deposit per apartment per week secures your booking. Full payment is due eight weeks prior to the start of your holiday, or at the time of booking if it is within the eight week period.
Accessibility
Apartment 1 is on the ground floor, so is easily accessible.
Outside
Pretty decked terrace, overlooking the river Salz. South facing but shade is provided by the beautiful trees and plants. Plenty of seating and a table for eating al fresco.
Coast/Beach
1 hours drive to Perpignan and the Mediterranean coast - huge swathes of beautiful sandy beaches with plenty of room to find a secluded spot. We also provide beach chairs which you're welcome to borrow for a trip to the seaside.
Skiing
1 ski resort within 45 minutes but another 5+ within 1.5 hours drive.

Travel
The nearest airports are Carcassonne (34 km), Perpignan (60 km) and Toulouse (100 km), Montpellier (190 km) and Barcelona airport (270 km).
There are regular flights to Carcassonne with RyanAir from London Stansted, Brussels, Dublin, East Midlands and Liverpool and flights to Perpignan from London Stansted, Birmingham, Southampton, Manchester, etc.
Distances
Located within a village with amenities. Couiza is between the towns of Quillan (10km) and Limoux (10km) and other nearby towns include Arques, Esperaza, Rennes-le-Chateau and Rennes le Bains.
Further details
Near to Couiza are the thermal spas of Alet les Bains and Rennes les Bains with outdoor swimming pools at a steady 30 degrees. There is river swimming in several spots up and down the river Salz, including one almost on our doorstep and another ten minutes walk away in a secluded spot. Locally, other water-sports include canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting and trout fishing (or tickling, if you prefer). There's pony-trekking on the local horses of the Camargue, golf and even a casino with piano bar, a dinosaur museum and a museum of hats, truly something for everyone!
East of Couiza is the forest of Arques and its swimming lake, to the West another two lakes, Montbel (pictured above), where you can wind-surf, canoe, kayak or hire pedalos and lake Puivert, which also has one of the most outstanding Cathare castles.
The castles of the Cathars dot the beautiful valley of Aude from Narbonne to Foix, the evidence of a remarkable era in history is cast on the landscape in the form of ruins and forts standing proud on promontories around Couiza and the Cathare region. The gite is 34 km from the medieval city of Carcassonne, in the heart of the Cathare region, famous for its walled city within a city. Carcassonne has many museums and historic monuments to visit. 8 km South of Couiza is the attractive market town of Quillan, which heralds the beginning of the climb into the Pyrenees and some amazing drives along roads hewn literally from the mountain side. Rock climbing, mountain walks and caving are all available in or near Quillan.
