There is the Roman town of Autun, Beaune with its famous Hospices, Cluny and its abbey at 64kms and Dijon (le palais des Ducs) at 72kms. Chalon sur Saône is famous for being the birthplace of photography. The Morvan National Park is close by at 35kms, and some guests have even made day trips up to the town of Sancerre in the Loire valley.
Further details
The area offers activities for all tastes. There are beautiful chateaux and monuments to visit along with a variety of museums offering an insight into divers topics such as Burgundy in prehistoric times, the development of wine production or the French resistance movement. Nature lovers will enjoy walking or cycling in the countryside and written guides are available to help you choose your outing. There are also a number of parks and lakes in the area.
Wine tasting is a part of life in Burgundy. This can take place at local domaines, or, for the less confident, organised tours can be arranged. The cottage offers an ideal base for exploring some of the famous vineyards of Burgundy. From Beaune, you can take the ‘route des vins’ through villages bearing the names of Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Pouligny Montrachet, Santenay…where wines of excellence are produced. Or, to the South, follow the Côte Chalonnaise where the villages of Rully, Mercurey, Givry, Montagny are to be found.
There are facilities for traditional sporting activities such as swimming and golf, along with fishing and bowling. For a special occasion it is possible to take a ride in a hot-air balloon. During the summer months there are a number of music festivals to suit all tastes and in July the town of Chalon sur Saône has a week-long festival of music, dance and street theatre which attracts participants from all over Europe.
For eating out, there is a small auberge at 2 minutes walk from the cottage, along with a choice of 3 other restaurants in the nearest small town which is at 6.5kms. There you will also find all shopping facilities including supermarket, pharmacy, post office, bank, petrol station... There are outdoor markets in abundance in the area where you can fill your basket with fresh produce before taking a seat at a pavement café and watching French country life go by.
