Le Rieu Is A Collection Of Four Lovingly Restored And Self-contained Gites
Within Easy Reach of Sandy Beaches, the Bayeux Tapestry and WWII History
1, 2 and 3 Bedroom Gites (Sleeps 2-21)

Le Rieu is a collection of four lovingly restored and self-contained gîtes – The Farmhouse, The Dairy, The Granary and The Hayloft – perfect for a life-affirming break for a party of just about any size. Hidden away in the peace and quiet of the Calvados region but close to sandy beaches, the Bayeux Tapestry and Normandy’s many other attractions, Le Rieu is a secret just waiting to be discovered. France still has many of these picture-postcard farmhouses: the classic proportions of the main house look out on a farmyard bounded by barns. And so it is with Le Rieu except, as you can see, the insides live up to the promise of the exterior with an emphasis on comfort not usual in French gîtes. Each property has its own bathroom/s, kitchen and front door so whichever gîte you choose you’ll be completely self-contained and for larger parties you’ll have space to breathe (and privacy when you want it). With comfy sofas, wood-burning stoves, and TV/DVDs, each is a home from home.

Changeover day
Saturday is preferred changeover day - checkout by 10am and arrivals from 4pm. Happy to discuss alternative needs.
Notes on accommodation
We provide boules, badminton and croquet for those looking for a little competitive activity and a hammock for those less inclined.
Accessibility
Unfortunately, Le Rieu cannot currently be claimed to be wheelchair friendly but we hope to upgrade facilities in the not too distant future.
Outside
The properties are securely bounded and the entrance is 100 metres from the tarmac road so traffic is not a problem. There is a barbecue to the side of the farmhouse intended for general use. Outdoor furniture is also available.
Coast/Beach
Omaha Beach, with all its WWII history is 25 minutes drive away. Information boards give an insight into what the invasion was like but this is still four miles of glorious sand, shallow water with lots of space to breathe.
Golf
For golfers two international golf courses - Omaha Beach Golf Club and Golf de la Presqu'ile du Cotentin - are less than half an hour away.
Special interest holidays
We are looking to run readers' courses here in May and September 2012. Please enquire for further information.

Further details
Le Molay-Littry is the classic small French town with boulangeries, boucheries and all the other local shops that French culture allows to thrive alongside a small Shoppi and a larger ‘Super U’ supermarket. For refreshment there are bars to pop into for a reviving coffee or something a little stronger and a selection of restaurants for various budgets. In fact, if you know your way round Google maps you can actually see a panoramic view of Le Molay-Littry as if you were standing in the middle of the roundabout at the centre of town.
Thursday is market day with fresh lamb, beef and poultry available from the nearby farms.
Booking notes
Bookings are secure on receipt of 25% deposit with the balance due 1 month travelling.
Guest comments
Hi Guy, just to say thank you for the gite and the holiday at such short notice!...we had a truly relaxing time and the Dairy was scarily big compared to our own house at home!! I couldn't get used to the size! The bikes were great too and we had a couple of lovely cycles around and about. I have left a detailed message in the comments book in terms of where to go, what to see and various bits and bobs but I would thoroughly recommend your gite at Le Rieu to anyone - although not too many people as I want to return and don’t want to find it fully booked! It would be perfect for a group of friends and we are already planning such a trip! We want to use the BBQ and sit out under the horse chestnuts drinking wine!! Thank you once again and I wish you every success with Le Rieu - judging by the comments in the book I am sure it will continue to be very successful! Emma.

About the owner
When I first drove up to Le Rieu, it took my breath away and time spent there has been magical. It seems only fair to share it with others who I hope will enjoy it as much.
It’s a perfect holiday venue for families of various sizes and the open space of the old farmyard is likely to be a playground where new friendships are made.
I've mentioned the obvious attractions above but ran out of space for things like the Balloon museum 20 mins away.
I would love to see 'significant birthday' celebrations at le Rieu: family groups could take their own space - and privacy - coming together in the Farmhouse to light those candles!
Whether you need a beach to entertain children, history - recent and ancient - to captivate the mind, or exercise of your choice you won't be disappointed.
Year purchased: 2009
Why the owner chose a home in this location
As the publisher of newbooks, a magazine for readers, I was looking for the ambiance of Le Rieu - I'm planning retreat holidays for readers and writers once the high season is over. I've holidayed a lot in Brittany and overlooked Normandy but it's much easier to get here and the appeal is the same as far as I can see.
Unique benefits of the property
The renovation of Le Rieu has been a labour of love - and it's probably cost far more than the property is worth but the feeling of returning the farm buildings to a productive life is rewarding. There are still two enormous barns to be tackled but the money pot needs to refill a little, first.
This part of France doesn't have the same command of English as coastal Brittany but the locals are friendly and appreciate it if we make an effort to speak French. An ability with charades does help, though.
