The chalets are self-contained (30sqm), each sleeping 2 adults and situated on a hillside amongst the trees next to our 16th century watermill on the River Arberoue and in the heart of the Basque Countryside. The chalets are set apart and all face a slightly different angle giving each outlook and verandah privacy. The property is located in a small hamlet just outside the village of La Bastide Clairence, voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. All local amenities are available in the village which is a 5 minute drive away. There is a bar in the hamlet within easy walking distance. Although we are in lovely peaceful countryside with the Pyrenees as a backdrop and just the sound of the river below, the Basque coastline, famous for its excellent surf conditions, is only a 25 minute drive away. We are just a 10 minute drive from the A64 motorway and near to Bayonne, Biarritz, Pau, St. Jean de Luz and also the Spanish border and beautiful towns such as San Sebastian and Bilbao.

Each chalet has a barbecue and, as well as the verandah with table and chairs, there is also an outside area with 2 sun chairs. There is a heated 3x10.5m swimming pool (pool heated from early May to end September/early October) with wooden decking area with sun beds situated in the middle of the hillside and chalets, giving easy access from all chalets. There is also salon furniture by the pool for evening cocktails and for enjoying the spectacular sunsets and views. We also have a very long river bank where we have 2 goats, a nice spot for picnics. The horses from the farmer's field opposite the watermill come down to the river daily to drink and our neighbours have several donkeys and 2 llamas! Our neighbours also make beauty products from the ass's milk! We have bicycles on site available for hire. Please note that we have 4 cats at the mill - they occasionally wander around the pool area and visit guests!

Coast/Beach
The Basque coast is famous for its long sandy beaches and Biarritz, Anglet, Guethary and Hossegor have excellent surf beaches. The closest beach is Anglet, just a 25 minute drive away and Biarritz is exactly 30 minutes' drive from the mill. Biarritz offers several sandy beaches: Grande Plage is the main beach, excellent for both families and for surfers and is situated just in front of the art deco Casino. Plage du Port Vieux is a sheltered little cove, perfect for swimming away from the surfers

Golf
There are several excellent golf courses in the Basque Country, including the oldest in Continental Europe in Pau. Please visit our website for more information and links.

Skiing
There are several excellent ski resorts in the Pyrenees about 45 minutes' drive away. Please see our website for more information.

The village of La Bastide Clairence has 2 very good restaurants, a small supermarket, a cafe/bar, a macaroon shop, a perfume shop and many local artisan's galleries. There is an excellent farmer's market each Friday evening during July and August where you can taste and buy all the local produce. The village has it's own 4 day festival at the end of July with running of the bulls!

Guest comments
A great location with superb weather. We have enjoyed Biarritz, Bayonne, Bilbao, Guethary, Pau and Iraty. La Bastide Clairence is a lovely village. We made friends with the resident lizard and enjoyed a dip in your new pool. Our French improved as the week progressed and we have found the Basque people incredibly warm, friendly and forgiving of our feeble attempts to master the language.
There is so much more to explore and so we hope to return one day.

July 2010
Really enjoyed our stay here. It was just as advertised and very peaceful. A great mix of traditional/rustic/modern and in a great location.
Best Bits.
St. Jean de Luz, delightful little town with great market, restaurants and beach. San Sebastian – Really good city for wandering round, great beach, fab atmosphere, must see. Biarritz – chilled, non touristy, good feel.
I would definitely come again, thanks. Jessica Bingham.

House swap
House Swap considered: New York, Cape Town, California, any European city - for a larger property, we can swap our 4 bedroom watermill (same location).

Owner profile

About the owner
I have lived in France for 20 years. I first lived in Paris for 7 years working for an American law firm and then lived in Grasse on the Cote d'Azur for just over 10 years, running a large B&B/rental villa. We have now moved to our property in the Basque Country, a 16th century watermill near Biarritz, where we rent out 5 holiday chalets on our land by the river. My husband Jon is a graphic designer and photographer working in the yachting industry on the Cote d'Azur. He is a keen surfer and I grew up in Cornwall so the Basque Country feels a lot like home, but with more sun! We are both English, but I speak fluent French and conversational Spanish. I also run a Translation Service in Biarritz - French to English

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
The laid-back atmosphere, lovely friendly people, stunning countryside and coastline, fantastic restaurants and tapas bars, so many festivals and concerts through the summer, so many different activities available. The Basque culture. The lovely peace and quiet at the mill, just birdsong and the sound of the river. The amazing wildlife: griffon vultures, deer, herons, kingfishers, otters, mink, butterflies, praying mantis, cranes, egrets.
