La Vallée is situated two minutes drive from our other houses, Maison Verger and La Petite Grange, on the edge of an extremely quiet valley with impressive views of the neighbouring countryside. It is a white weather boarded house with blue shutters, built approximately one hundred and fifty years ago and is spacious and sophisticated, sleeping five very comfortably. It is furnished with antique furniture. The house is set in approximately an acre of grounds, which include various fruit trees and an adjacent barn, currently used for storage, mostly of wood for the large inglenook fireplace.

Notes on accommodation
The house has full central heating as well as logs for the open fire. It is entirely suitable for children but we do have sheep in part of the garden.
Accessibility
The ground floor could be used for someone with mobility problems but there is no downstairs bathroom, although there is a wc.
Outside
French doors lead from the garden room to a patio with long reaching views over the valley. There is a supply of garden furniture and a barbecue. There is also a gravelled area to the front of the house, with garden table and chairs. The whole is set in a large area of garden.
Coast/Beach
The house is 15 miles from the coastal resorts of Honfleur, Trouville and Deauville. Honfleur is perhaps the most famous resort on the beautiful Cote Fleurie with its yachting harbour, fishing port and quaint old streets. Deauville, a sophisticated and fashionable seaside town is popular with the Parisians. We particularly like the adjoining resort of Trouville with its Edwardian buildings and long sandy beach which is ideal for children.
Travel
We are 20 miles from the ferry at Le Havre and an hour from Ouistreham (Caen). The Channel Tunnel/Calais/Boulogne is three hours away by fast motorway. The nearest airport is Chas.de Gaulle in Paris. Cars can be hired at Bernay (20 mins).
Distances
The house is situated in the centre of a triangle formed by the villages of Epaignes, Lieurey and Cormeilles, all approx 2 miles away. As well as the nearest beaches, the Normandy landing beaches, the Bayeux tapestry and Rouen are all accessible, taking about an hour to reach. There is a train service to Paris which takes an hour and a half. Monet's garden at Giverny is approximately just over an hour's drive.
Further details
With children in mind there are swimming pools in Pont Audemer (12 minutes) and Honfleur (20 minutes). There is a large lake at Pont-l'Eveque where you can swim, play on the little beach, take a boat out or fish. Further down the coast are other attractive resorts such as Cabourg and Houlgate. There is a Conservation Parc/Zoo (Cerza) where animals can be seen in their natural habitat at Ouilly-du-Rouley on the Cormeilles/Lisieux road. Locally - the small towns of Epaignes and Lieurey are equidistant from the houses. They both have a good bread shop, butcher, chemist and general store with a small weekly market. Pont Audemer, the nearest large town, has a medieval town centre and excellent twice-weekly markets. The smaller town of Cormeilles, some five minutes drive, is very pretty with a number of bars, restaurants, antique shops and food shops and supermarket. There is an excellent tour (in English) of the Calvados distillery. There are some very interesting museums in the area. The Peace Museum (Musee de Paix) in Caen is exceptional and gives a very moving account of both World Wars. There are two very good war museums in Falaise and Bayeux; maritime museum in Honfleur and Fecamp and the Museum of Art in Trouville. Le Bec Hellouin, south of Pont Audemer, is a picturesque village, where you can wander round the abbey grounds. Paris can be reached by train from the station at Bernay which is 20 minutes drive to the south. The journey to Paris takes about an hour and a quarter. There are timetables at the house. It takes two and a quarter hours to drive to Disney Paris, or you can travel by train and metro. The historic city of Rouen is an hour away and offers a good day out - museums, markets, restaurants and shopping.

Owner profile
About the owner
Our pocket of Normandy - inland from Honfleur and Trouville - is pasture land, valleys, cow-filled fields and orchards. Over the years we have improved the farmhouse, added a barn conversion on adjoining land and two years ago we bought La Vallée, our third house, two minutes away from the others. It has wonderful views over a tranquil valley, no-one seems to pass by. We dabbled in French antiques over the years, enjoying furnishing the houses as they should be but also, as keen cooks, made sure that they were well equipped.
Year purchased: 2008
Why the owner chose a home in this location
Having owned a house round the corner, I used to cycle past La Vallée and dream about owning it. One day, I stopped and having written a letter in my best French enquiring if it could ever be for sale, was amazed to receive a reply in the affirmative. It took over a year of negotiations to conclude the deal but when I sit on the patio, watching the sun go down, glass of wine in hand, I never fail to appreciate what it means to spend time in this lovely part of Normandy. There are so few cars travelling by, that I tend to jump up and look if I hear one. For me, quiet time in the garden and a wander down the road to feed donkey, are all that is required.
Unique benefits of the property
The house is on its own, without neighbours and this might not suit everyone. On the other hand, it might! Country lanes and meandering walks, no-one around but still within a short distance of the lovely Normandy coast - cultural trips to Honfleur and Trouville, with its Edwardian houses. A short drive to replenish supplies - market fresh.
