'Rene' is a traditional stone built house set on the edge of Balleroy just 15 minutes from Bayeux and 30 minutes from the coast and the D Day landing sites and museums. The village is set in the heart of unspoilt countryside and forest. Excellent roads make it easily accessible from the Normandy ports and it is literally within a few minutes stroll from the renowned 'Manoir de Dome' restaurant. There is a range of very good shops within easy walking distance of the house. 'Rene' is a well furnished and comfortable family home with great character which sleeps 7 people in comfort. The house is centrally heated so that you can enjoy the riches of the area in any season. There are wonderful views to the rear of the house over the chateau ground and the Cerisy forest (lovely in winter when the trees are covered in frost) and the south facing garden with its traditional stone walls , makes a wonderful setting for alfresco meals.

Notes on accommodation
Rene is not a gite, it is our family home in France and is therefore furnished and equipped to a very comfortable standard. Many 'personal touches' provide character and charm. Comments made by guests in our visitors book show how much they have appreciated the house and its situation (see separate section).

Accessibility
The stairs to the first floor, and the steps down to the garden ar very steep and may not be suitable for less agile guests.

Outside
The French windows from the lounge and the back door from the kitchen lead onto a balcony running cross the back of the house. The view from here is delightful. Steps lead down to a south garden which is landscaped into two patios enclosed by a traditional Normandy stone wall. Sun loungers are provided along with a patio table and chairs.
The views from the back of the house over the chateau grounds and the forest, are a real feature of the house and provide the best of both worlds - the convenience of living in a village with the shops and facilities in easy walking distance- and the unspoilt beauty of the Normandy countryside. Balleroy itself is an ideal centre for your holidays, being well equiped with a range of shops and having considerable historic interest and appeal. The Chateau with its ballooning museum is at the top of the road and the yearly balloon festival in June takes place just behind the house!

Coast/Beach
Balleroy is situated just 30 minutes drive from a wide range of beaches and coastal walks. There are many fine sandy beaches in the area as well as pretty coastal resorts and harbours. The house is conveniently situated for visits to all the 'D' Day landing sites and war memorials. Arromanche, with its famous Mulberry Harbours is easily accessible, as are Omaha Beach and Port en Bessin. The coastline in this part of Normandy is unspoilt and dramatic and there are many fine coastal walks.

Golf
There is a fine golf course situated at Omaha, 30 minutes from the house.

Travel
The property is easily accessible from Caen airport (20km away), and from Normandy ports (45 minutes drive from Ouistreham, and 90 minutes from both le Havre or Cherbourg.) A car is recommended to explore the richness of the area but all essential supplies are available on foot in the village.

Distances
This part of Normandy is rich in natural beauty and sites of historical interest. Bayeux with its tapestry is just 15 minutes away and there are numerous 'D' Day landing sites nearby. The 17th century chateau in the village is open to visitors along with its museum of ballooning. The forest provides endless opportunities for walking and cycling. Historic castles associated with William the Conquerer and Henry V can be found at Caen and Falaise and the Abbey of Cerisy le Foret is a delight.

Further details
Balleroy has only 600 residents but it is well served with shops and amenities. There are two boulangeries, a boucherie and a well stocked supermarket all within easy walking distance of the house. The Post Office has a cash point and public telephone. The highly acclaimed 'Manoir de Dome' restaurant is just 3 minutes walk away. The Chateau in Balleroy (** in the Michelin guide) and the museum of ballooning are just up the hill from the house and open to the public every day but Tuesday. Check the dates of the annual ballooning festival, held in the Chateau grounds behind the house each June.
The property backs on to the Cerisy Forest and there are miles of walking cycling or horse riding right on the doorstep. There are many pretty villages in the area and miles and miles of unspoilt countryside. Traditionally hunting lands for the gentry, the area has many fine Chateaux (over 20 listed in Wikipedia) including Henri-Fontaine and Cerisy le Foret and Juare Mondaye. Bayeaux, just 20 minutes away, is very picturesque and of great historical interest with its tapestry, its Cathedral and its Medieval quarter and half timbered houses. There is a market every Saturday on the Rue St-Patrice and Rue St-Malo and there is a huge medieval festival which takes place during the first week of July each year. The war cemetery and WW2 museum are also well worth a visit.
From Bayeaux it is a short drive to the D Day landing beaches, beautiful sandy beaches from where the liberation of Europe started on 6th June 1944. That day is now famous as D-Day and has been the subject of many films, such as The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan. The beaches have kept their coded names and are known as, from East to West, Sword Beach, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, Omaha Beach and Utah Beach.
Many museums, cemeteries, memorials are scattered in villages along the sea, such as Arromanches-les-Bains, Colleville-sur-Mer, Port-en-Bessin, Ste-Mère-Eglise, Le Point du Hoc and Longues sur Mer.

Owner profile

About the owner
We live in England with our two daughters and a menagerie of animals. Dave is a Vicar and I am a part-time Headteacher and a Homeopath.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We have always loved France and bought the property in 2002. We love Balleroy because it is so "French" and so easily accessible from either Caen or Cherbourg. There is loads to see and miles of beautiful coastline. 'Rene' is comfortable and homely, and we love the garden and the open views from the back of the house. Everything is so unspoilt across there, lots of wide open spaces and clear skies.
