Semur -en- Brionnais is one of France’s “beaux villages”, a name which reflects its long history. The Château of St. Hugues in the village is the oldest in Burgundy and its church dates back to the 11th century. This is an ideal area in which to relax and unwind, or to explore the many sites of historical interest of which Burgundy has an abundance. Owner profile
About the owner
As a long standing francophile, I spend as much time as possible in this my second home. The locals are friendly and welcoming and I enjoy trying out my not very adequate French on them. At home in Cheshire, I attend French conversation classes in an effort to improve, but people are very forbearing in this part of the world and are very pleased if you make any kind of effort. My family and I love the area, not only for its many attractions but also because it has retained its French character. Vive la difference!

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought this house because we all appreciate unspoilt countryside, plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding, etc and generally being able to unwind and just indulge oneself. Burgundy has a fascinating history and when you feel energetic you can explore the many castles, abbeys and churches that abound. Of course, you will know of its reputation for gastronomy and its excellent wines which all add to the holiday experience.

The village is not served by a regular bus and a car is essential, but in return you are able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity which rural France. The house is stone built and is of traditional design with original beams and wood floors except for the sitting room which is ceramic.
