Accessibility
The ground floor of the house can be accessed without steps however the living space is on the 1st floor and as this is a mountainous area there are plenty of hills about.
Outside
There is a patio area with seating, a separate barbecue area, a spacious garden to explore, swings for the kids as well as a few chickens (think fresh eggs for breakfast). The garden is made up of a large grassed area and smaller wooded area.
Coast/Beach
The Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts are both just over 2 hours away. Narbonne Plage is a popular destination with fabulous sandy beaches.
Golf
The Golf club de l'Ariège is around 25 minutes drive and offers an eighteen hole course in an impressive setting that is both varied and technically demanding. There is also a six hole short course that serves as a pitch and putt, a practice area, an approach green and a putting green next to the clubhouse. A professional is on hand to provide lessons.
Skiing
The biggest downhill ski resort in the Ariège is Ax-Trois-Domains above the village of Ax-les-Thermes. Around a 40 minute drive from us, the resort offers something for all levels, with over 70km of pistes.
There are also a number of smaller resorts dotted around the region; including Goulier Neige in the Vicdessos valley (around 30 minutes drive), providing great places for kids and beginners, or a day's skiing for those with more experience.
Cross country skiing and snow shoeing can be enjoyed at the two neighbouring, yet different environments of Beille and La Chioula; one an immense plateau at 1800m offering panoramic views, the other a welcoming forested landscape. Both around 40 minutes drive.
Special interest holidays
We chose our location to be close to the most popular activities, walking, climbing and cycling. We have a major walking route (GR du Pays du Trois Seigneurs) passing the accommodation. The route is a multi day tour of the region but also gives access to many circular routes that can be completed in a day. We are in the heart of the Bedeilhac Rock climbing area and just a 5 minute walk from one of the most popular crags in the Pyrenees. The village is a regular on the Tour de France and the 2009 tour passed through on route to the Col du Port. Several other well knows 'Cols' are within easy reach and the area is fantastic for road and mountain biking generally. Other popular activities that can be enjoyed locally include: fishing, paragliding, mountaineering, tennis, caving, horse and pony trekking and much much more.
Travel
The closest airports are Toulouse and Carcassonne, both around 1hr 15mins. Easyjet, Flybe, Ryanair and British Airways operate regular flights. Other options include: Pau & Perpignan. Car hire is available at both airports. It is possible to catch a train from Toulouse to Foix/Tarascon-sur Ariege where we can arrange to pick you up and bring you to the accommodation. There is plenty to do on foot from the house, for longer stays and to really explore the area a car is recommended.
Distances
Tarascon-sur-Ariege- (5 minutes drive) is a good sized town with shops, market, tourist attraction and plenty of eating options.
Foix (15 minutes drive)- is the departmental capital with plenty to see and do.
Andorra famous for skiing and tax free shopping is around 1.5 hrs drive.
Barcelona is around 3-4 hrs drive or around 6 hrs on the train (€20).
Our area is famous for its prehistoric caves that have provided some of the finest artwork and artifacts found anywhere in the world.

Base Calames is a fantastic place to base yourself if you want to sample all the Pyrenees has to offer. We went specifically to ski, and had some great days at Ax le Thermes, just 20 mins down the road. In the summmer it's a great spot for climbing, walking or cycling - the village is right in the middle of Tour de France country. We rented the gite, which was very comfortable especially the big main room with the log burner which was a really cosy place to spend the evenings. We paid extra for breakfast and supper, which was well worth it, especially after a hard day's skiing , and it was lovely to come back to a home-cooked, three course meal.

I stayed here for a few nights recently. Fantastic place, comfy beds and great hosts. Really well situated for climbing on Calames (brilliant single and multi-pitch sun trap with climbing of all grades) and surrounding crags. Posted on ukclimbing.
