There are some delightful walks locally and along the canal du midi which is a 40 minute drive north of Dun. There is a riding stable 2 km.from the house which allows a much more extensive exploration of the counrtyside.
The whole region called Cathar country, due to the religious sect who used to inhabit the area. There are a large number of ruined cathar castles, built precariously on the tops of mountains and ridges. Montsegur, Queribus, Peyrepertuse, and Aguilar are just a selection, but definitely worth a visit. Mirepoix has a lovely town square surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants to suit most tastes.
It is a delightful place to sit and watch the world go by. There is, more often than not, some sort of fete occurring at the weekends and the Monday morning market must not be missed. There are several banks and ATMs, a chemist and a number of local pottery shops. For a special occasion, the Relais Royal, just off the main square, has a splendid restaurant.
Tarascon is the town to head to see the cave painting interest. There are several grottoes from which to choose.

There are several zoos, adventure parks and local lakes with beaches.
The cite d'espace ( Space centre) in Toulouse is well worth a visit, as is the city itself.

Owner profile

About the owner
We live in England but have spent many holidays in various parts of France, mostly wine growing areas or ski resorts. We first visited the Ariege in 2005 and bought the house in 2006. We did not intend to buy such a large house but are very glad we did. We have plenty of room for our children, friends and relatives too.

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Having stayed with friends in the area previously, we enjoyed the quiet ambiance of the place. Dun is a small village but an ideal base from which to explore. The proximity to the mountains for skiing was definitely a draw and the summers are fabulous. We have been on several wine tasting trips, some very close and some further afield, like Minervois and Corbiere. There are some great restaurants to try.

Unique benefits of the property
You will love the tranquility and peaceful atmosphere. The house is light and airy and each floor has its own sitting room, so if you want to be alone, you can be.
