Situated just off the main shopping street in the historic Bastide Saint Louis, Our little townhouse is ideally placed for walking to the medieval city (la Cite), Place Carnot, Canal du Midi and the River Aude. The house dates back to 1624 and was recently renovated, retaining many original features. Guests will find many personal touches that make this house feel more like a home than standard holiday accommodation. Carcassonne is a fantastic area to explore, whether you're interested in its Cathar history (La Cite is not to be missed), or touring the plentiful vineyards, cruising along the Canal du Midi, swimming in the River Aude or sampling the culinary delights of the various markets and restaurants - all are within walking distance from the house. Then, at the end of the day you can relax on our sunny terrace with a glass of wine and continue to soak up the atmosphere of this charming French town.

Notes on accommodation
This is our 'second home' and we have invested much love and care into the renovation. We specifically rent to other couples who are looking for something with charm and character - a special place in which you can relax and spend time together in comfort. The photographs we display on our advert and website will give you an idea of what the house is like rather than showing you every cupboard and corner. We love to keep some of the details as a surprise for your arrival and always aim to exceed your expectations. If you would like any specific information about the house then of course we are always happy to provide it. And, if you are celebrating a special occasion and would like our help in planning a surprise for your partner then please do get in touch.

For safety reasons we do not permit smoking anywhere in the property or on the terrace. As our home is just for couples, we do not accept children or pets.

Accessibility
We regret that our house may be a difficult choice for people with mobility problems. The pathways leading up to the house are narrow as are the two winding staircases once inside. However if you are traveling with a lot of luggage, you are able to store heavy cases in the ground floor storage room rather than taking them all upstairs with you.

Outside
We have a sunny, paved terrace accessed from the living area - a rare space to have in the Bastide! Table and chairs are provided for dining/relaxing. There is parking available immediately outside the house - this is metered at certain times of day. There are some free parking spaces about 5 minutes walk away and we can provide easy directions for finding these if you're not familiar with the area. If you prefer secure underground parking, there are several locations to choose from also within easy walking distance. We have a downstairs storage room where you can keep bicycles if you decide to hire them during your stay.

Coast/Beach
The tranquil Lac du Cavayere is just a ten minute drive away and combines a sandy beach with water sports, walking, tree-based activities (climbing, zip-lines etc) as well as relaxing walks and swimming. A 45 minute drive will take you to the beaches around Narbonne on the South coast.

Travel
Carcassonne airport is a ten minute drive from the centre of town. An airport shuttle bus meets each flight (5 Euros per person) and will drop you at the train station (Gare SNCF) - just a few minutes walk from the house. You can fly direct to Carcassonne from London Stansted and many regional airports from the UK - all with Ryanair. If you choose to fly to Toulouse or Beziers then you can catch a train direct to Carcassonne.

Distances
The house is in the historic Bastide Saint Louis - you can easily walk around Carcassonne and are just a couple of minutes walk away from the hustle and bustle of Place Carnot. You can hire bicycles locally (we have space for you to store them), walk, take a boat along the canal or use the excellent local bus and train service. If you do want to hire a car then you can do so easily at the airport. We're less than an hour's drive from both Narbonne and Toulouse and about 2.5 hours from Barcelona.

Further details
Carcassonne always seems to have activities organised for its residents and visitors throughout the year, making it a great destination at any time. The most well known is probably the 'Festival of two towns'; a series of musical events right throughout the summer featuring opera, dance, theatre, French and international music - many of the performances are free. The date in everyone's diary is July 14th because every year at 10.30pm, the skies above la Cite are set ablaze with an amazing fireworks spectacular lasting over 25 minutes. Then, during the last week of August, it's the turn of 'Spanish Week'. Shows, events, concerts, dance performances, and gastronomic specialities combine to make a great party atmosphere. You'll find the location of our house very convenient. There are many charming shops nearby as well as practical considerations such as a cashpoint and chemist at the top of the road. It will take you about 2 minutes to walk to Place Carnot; here you will find many restaurants as well as a fabulous market 3 times a week. We've recently discovered a covered market just a few streets past the square, selling fresh fish, meat, pate. Plus there are many tempting bakeries to choose from - great for popping out for fresh, warm croissants in the morning.

Booking notes
If you decide to book with us then a 50% deposit is payable in all cases. The balance is due 28 days before arrival. Please ensure you have adequate travel insurance as we cannot offer refunds - we are happy to negotiate alternative dates though if the property is available. Our prices are inclusive of VAT, Tourist tax and a general clean between bookings. The only additional charge is for the laundry collection service which is 30 euros payable locally at the end of your stay.

"We loved your house. The location was superb, more than that it was the cosiest haven one could imagine; decorated with taste, flair and practical style. We had a wonderful time and used your excellent facilities (wanted for nothing) cooking, reading and relaxing. You've done such a great job on this place - keep on doing what you're doing."

Owner profile

Shelley & Simon

About the owner
Simon and I live in England. We both have office jobs and commute daily into London. Our little house in France lets us 'escape' to great weather, food, walks and of course gives us the perfect excuse to take time out together as often as we can. We've opened up the house to other couples wanting to experience the history and magic of Carcassonne.

Year purchased: 2008

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We love the fact that we can load up our backpacks in the morning and after a short flight, be relaxing on our sunny terrace in the afternoon! The airport shuttle bus is almost door to door for us and our spirits always lift as we cross the bridge over the Canal du Midi and walk into the Bastide. We never tire of exploring the area and seem to find something new with each visit. I always tour each of the Brocante shops looking for bits for the house! We also always enjoy a visit to our nearest 'sand and water' - just 10 minutes away at the peaceful Lac du Cavayere or we're about a 45 minute drive to the sun-soaked beaches around Narbonne. Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards as well as remnants from its Cathar past so there's plenty to explore!

Unique benefits of the property
We've renovated the house as a home rather than a typical rental property so there's lots of charming features that you may not find in other accommodation. The king-size bed has a luxury mattress and Egyptian cotton linens. There's a roll-top bath in the en-suite bathroom in addition to the large walk-in shower and fluffy towels - we even provide you with bathrobes to lighten your luggage. The spacious living area has lots of books and games as well as a flat screen TV, DVD player and CD/iPod docking port. There's a terrace to enjoy that glass of wine or simply look down and watch the people go about their day to day business in this delightful French town. Top Tip: Ryanair flies straight to Carcassonne and if you just bring hand luggage, you can keep the costs really low!
